Basketball Little Bucs split games with Robert L. Bland and Elkins

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Bucs split a pair of games with Robert L. Bland and Elkins.

They dropped a 43-24 road decision to Robert L. Bland and then turned around and held off Elkins at  home by a 36-33 score.

The split left Jason Westfall’s squad with a 3-7 record.

Against Robert L. Bland, the Little Bucs couldn’t protect a first-quarter lead.

The Little Bucs opened up a 10-6 lead after one quarter with Ian Strader getting five points, Luke Yardley and Landon Marple two each and Jaden Westfall one.

The Little Bucs managed just three points in the second quarter, a basket by Strader and a free throw by Yardley as they fell behind at the half by a 17-13 score.

Robert L. Bland extended their lead winning the third quarter by a 15-5 margin.

Westfall and Carter Zuliani each had a basket and Bryson Johnston added a free throw for the Little Bucs in the third quarter.

The final quarter went to Robert L. Bland by an 11-6 margin.

Strader had a three-pointer, Blake Runyon added a basket and Westfall a free throw for the Little Bucs in the final quarter.

Strader led the Little Bucs with 10 points

Tanner Griffith paced Robert L. Bland with 14 points.

The game against Elkins a tightly contested affair.

In a slow first quarter, the Little Bucs took a 4-2 lead after getting baskets from Johnston and Yardley.

The Little Bucs were edged by Elkins by a 10-9 margin in the second quarter but they still owned a 13-12 lead at the break.

Johnston had six of the nine the points while Nathaniel Ringer had two and Strader one.

With Johnston pouring in nine points and Westfall two, the Little Bucs won the third quarter by an 11-9 count and led going into the final quarter by a 24-21 score.

The Little Bucs and Elkins battled to an even 12-12 deadlock in the fourth quarter with Westfall getting four points, Yardley and Johnston three each and Strader and Marple one each.

Johnston had 20 points to lead the Little Bucs.

Elkins’ Aaron Sharp had nine points.

The Little Bucs will return to action Thursday when they host Robert L. Bland at 7:30 p.m.
