Basketball Little Bucs go 1-1 at Preston Tourney


KINGWOOD – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Buccaneers  dropped a heartbreaking 47-46 decision to Central Preston here Dec. 28 in first-round action of the Preston Holiday Tournament.

But they bounced back to trounce Bruceton by a 53-33 spread in the consolation clash Dec. 29.

The match-up with Central Preston got off to a slow start, with the Little Bucs trailing by a 6-5 count after one period.

Buckhannon claimed the second quarter by a 14-11 margin, with Mark Hurst bombing in a pair of three-pointers, Josh Nesbitt canning four points, and Zach Calef-Boring and Ian Donnen adding two apiece.

With Shawn Blandino tallying six markers, Hurst and Nesbitt hitting three, and Calef-Boring and Donnen adding two each, the Little Bucs took the third canto by a 16-13 edge to head into the final six minutes with a 35-30 lead.

But Central Preston outscored the Little Bucs by a 17-11 count in the fourth stanza.

With the game tied late at 44-44, Josh Nesbitt put in a basket on a missed shot to give the Little Bucs a 46-44 lead with two seconds left, but as time expired, a Central Preston player heaved a one-handed shot from three-quarters court and it went in at the buzzer stunning the Little Bucs.

Hurst led Buckhannon with 15 points, coming on five three-pointers. Rounding out the scoring were Nesbitt with nine markers, Blandino with eight, Donnen and Calef-Boring each with six, and Zade Woody with two.

In the consolation game, the Little Bucs were down by a 9-7 score in the opening period, but came alive to dominate the remaining three quarters.

Blandino poured in a game-high 20 points. Calef-Boring and Donnen banged in eight apiece, Gage Raschella and Wade Nesbitt each had five, Josh Nesbitt added three, and Woody and Ely Cain contributed two each.

The Little Bucs saw their record go to 6-4 going into last Thursday’s contest at Robert L. Bland.

They will entertain Philippi Tuesday night and Lincoln Thursday.
