TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs were leading 52-51 the Bridgeport Indians with six seconds left with the Indians inbounding the ball under their own basketball.
With Bridgeport calling a time-out, it gave Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle a chance to set up his defense to protect the one-point lead.
Bridgeport turned the ball over on a traveling call and fouled Brooklyn Maxwell with 2.6 seconds left.
Maxwell calmly made both free throws to give the Lady Bucs a 54-51 lead.
Bridgeport’s Gabby Reep got off a three-point shot just outside the three-point arc, that rimmed off for the Indians giving the Lady Bucs a thrilling three-point win.
What was the advice that Kittle gave to his troops during the time out?
“Don’t let them score,” joked Kittle. “We talked about several different scenarios about some things they had done inbounding the ball earlier in the game. I thought we did a good job of collapsing and forcing them to make a pass outside of the paint, then we get the travel call.”
In the victory, Shelby McDaniels scored a game-high 28 points going nine of 13 from the floor and eight of nine at the free throw line.
“McDaniels had a great game,” remarked Kittle. “She did a great job on both sides of the ball. She made the plays when she needed to.”
The Lady Bucs were down early by a 6-3 margin but McDaniels uncorked a three-pointer and McKenzie Reynolds scored on a put back to give Buckhannon-Upshur an 8-6 margin.
The Lady Bucs built a 13-8 lead after a McDaniels basket, but Bridgeport closed it to a one-point game, at 16-15, with 47 seconds remaining.
McDaniels turned in an old-fashioned three-point play at the end of the quarter to give B-U a 19-15 lead after one-quarter of action.
A lay-up by McDaniels pushed the Buckhannon-Upshur lead to five, at 25-20, with 3:09 left in the half.
Bridgeport closed with a 7-3 run to end the half trimming the Lady Buc lead to one at 28-27.
Bridgeport took momentum of the game in the third quarter, opening up a six-point lead at 40-34.
McDaniels made a free throw, Kendal Currence added a lay-up and McDaniels came back with two free throws for a 5-0 run making it a 40-39 game with 17 seconds left in the quarter.
Anna Marie Pinti made a huge three-pointer for the Indians at the buzzer giving them a 43-39 advantage heading into the final stanza.
Reynolds scored B-U’s first six points of the fourth quarter as they cut the margin to two, at 47-45.
McDaniels made a lay-up to deadlock the game at 47-47, but Bridgeport’s Paige Humble made a jumper in the paint to return the lead back to the Indians at 49-47 with 4:10 remaining.
After playing catch-up for the most of the second half, the momentum finally swung to the Lady Buc side when Maxwell unleashed her third three-pointer of the night giving the Lady Bucs a 50-49 lead.
Bridgeport turned it over on their next possession on a five-second call and McDaniels responded with a jumper in the paint to give Buckhannon-Upshur a 52-49 lead with two minutes remaining.
Maddie Wilson made a jumper with 1:15 left to pull the Indians to within one, at 52-51.
B-U missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free throw line, but Bridgeport missed a shot with 10 seconds remaining.
With the Lady Bucs rushing to get the ball up court, they turned it over giving it back to Bridgeport with nine seconds left.
That set up the climatic finish of the Bridgeport time-out, turnover and Maxwell’s two free throws.
“Maxwell’s fourth quarter three-pointer was huge for us in getting the momentum back,” noted Kittle. “We just kept hovering around Bridgeport being down by four to six points. Her basket allowed us to get over that hump and take over the game. That gave us some confidence and a little momentum.”
Following McDaniels in the scoring column for the Lady Bucs were Maxwell with 11 and Reynolds with eight.
Humble led Bridgeport with 21 points.
Bridgeport dropped to 9-9 overall with the loss and 6-6 in the Big 10 Conference.
The Lady Bucs have won five of the last six and improved to 11-6 overall and 9-3 in the Big 10 Conference.
“A lot of our close games that we have played in this year really paid off for us tonight,” stated Kittle. “We kept our poise and executed when we needed to. I am very proud of their effort.”
The Lady Bucs will return to action tonight when they visit Lewis County for a 7:30 p.m. start.
The Lady Bucs beat Lewis County in their season opener back on Dec. 6 by a 44-21 score.
