Basketball Lady Bucs tumble to Class AA No. 1 North Marion, 60-46

Brooklyn Maxwell (14) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs puts in two points in the paint against North Marion during their Big 10 Conference contest Tuesday night at the high school. Maxwell had nine points and 10 rebounds but the Lady Bucs lost to Class AA No. 1 North Marion.

TENNERTON – There seemed be a lid on the basket for the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers when they squared off against Class AA No. 1 North Marion Huskies in a Big 10 Conference battle Tuesday night.

The Lady Bucs shot just 34 percent in a 60-46 setback to the Huskies.

That number was inflated with a 20-point fourth quarter after the game was no longer in doubt.

The Lady Bucs made just six field goals in the first half.

“We were a little tentative in the first half especially the first quarter,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “We had so many good looks, but we were just weren’t able to throw the ball in the hoop.”

Despite the poor shooting effort from his Lady Bucs, Kittle felt they ran the game plan against North Marion just the way he wanted.

“I thought we executed well,” stated Kittle. “We got what we wanted as the high post was there all night. I don’t know how many 12 to 15 footers we missed. It just wasn’t our night shooting the ball. We executed everything we did in practice and brought it to the game. I thought we got everything we wanted on the offensive end; we couldn’t just buy a basket. I was proud of effort, it just wasn’t our night.”

Kendall Currence gave the Lady Bucs a quick 2-0 lead with a lay-up, and after a North Marion basket, Kennedy Samargo went inside for two points giving Buckhannon-Upshur a 4-2 lead.

A three-pointer by Karlie Dunham gave North Marion their first lead, at 5-4, but Currence made a free throw to even the game at 5-5, with five minutes gone in the first quarter.

North Marion closed the quarter on a 9-0 run for a 14-5 lead.

With North Marion leading by a 20-7 score, Shelby McDaniels turned in an old-fashioned three-point play and after another Husky basket, McKenzie Reynolds scored on a put back to keep the Lady Bucs down by 10 at 22-12 with 3:44 left in the half.

North Marion scored seven unanswered for a 29-12 advantage, but Kiara Woods put in a jumper and Reynolds scored on another put back to make it a 29-16 score at the break.

Kassidy Wilfong started the second half with a free throw, and after a score by North Marion’s Olivia Toland, McDaniels scored on a lay-up to cut the deficit to 12, at 31-19, with two minutes elapsed in the third quarter.

Unfortunately for the Lady Bucs, they couldn’t get any closer the rest of the game.

North Marion went on an 11-3 run to open a 42-22 lead with three minutes remaining.

They closed the quarter with seven straight points taking a 53-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

With North Marion holding a 55-27 advantage, the Lady Bucs went on a 9-0 run.

McDaniels made two free throws, Brooklyn Maxwell scored after a rebound, McDaniels came back with a lay-up, Maxwell put in a foul shot and Samargo scored on a lay-up during the run.

That made it a 55-36 score with three minutes remaining.

Leading 61-40, the Lady Bucs scored the final six points of the game as Lexi Kelley scored twice and McDaniels put in two free throws.

Kittle expected North Marion to throw a heavy full-court press at his Lady Bucs as they did exactly that.

The Lady Bucs committed 24 turnovers in the game, but many were after they worked the ball past the press and into North Marion’s side of the court.

“I thought we did a great job with their press,” stated North Marion. “We were patient and reversed the ball and didn’t let them speed us up.”

McDaniels led the Lady Bucs with 16 points and six steals while Maxwell added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Taylor Buonamici and Toland each had 16 points to lead North Marion.

The Huskies improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big 10.

The Lady Bucs dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big 10.

Buckhannon-Upshur will return to action tonight when they visit Grafton for a Big 10 Conference clash that will being at 7:30 p.m.
