Basketball Lady Bucs drop games to Preston and Spring Mills

KINGWOOD – Following a 2-0 start to the season, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs ran into some issues this past week dropping a pair of close road games.

The Lady Bucs went to Kingwood on Thursday and dropped a 59-53 decision to the Preston Knights and they made the long trip to the eastern panhandle on Saturday and lost a 51-46 decision to Spring Mills.

The Lady Bucs and Preston played to an even 12-12 first quarter with Kendal Currence going off for eight points in the opening frame for Buckhannon-Upshur.

Shelby McDaniels put in eight of the 12 points for the Lady Bucs in the second quarter, but the  Knights held a slim 27-24 advantage at the intermission.

The B-U defense, which has been solid this season, clamped down on the Knight offense limiting them to just five third-quarter points.

With Currence and McKenzie Reynolds each leading the offense putting in four points apiece, the Lady Bucs won the quarter by a 13-5 margin and took 37-32 lead into the final quarter.

Preston started the fourth quarter on an 11-5 run for a 43-42 lead with 4:42 remaining but Kiara Woods scored on a screen to return the lead to the Lady Bucs at 44-43 and McDaniels made a pair of free throw on the Lady Bucs’ next possession to up the lead to 46-43.

Preston scored two straight baskets to retake the lead at 47-46 with 3:20 remaining, but Brooklyn Maxwell made a free throw to deadlock the game again at 47-47 with 2:40 left.

Just 10 seconds later Michelle Thomas returned the lead to Preston with a free throw and Tori Gartlis hit a deep three-pointer for Knights giving them a 51-47 lead with 1:45 left.

McDaniels came back with a foul shot making it a one possession game, at 51-48, with 1:37 remaining.

Kylie Felton made a lay-up to push it to a 53-48 lead for Preston and the Lady Bucs had a two chances on their next possession but failed to score.

Thomas made a free throw to extend the Preston advantage to 54-48 with 40 seconds remaining.

The Lady Bucs turned the ball over on their next two possessions as Preston upped their lead to 56-48 at the free throw line.

Maxwell put in a lay-up with 23 seconds remaining to cut it down to a two possession game, at 56-50.

Thomas was left open on the inbound play and scored an easy lay-up making it a 58-50 contest with 15 seconds left.

Reynolds nailed a three-pointer with a second left to make it a 58-53 score.

Gartlis hit a free throw for Preston to wrap up the scoring.

McDaniels and Reynolds each had 11 points to lead the B-U offense.

Michelle Thomas had 19 points for Preston.

In Saturday’s game with Spring Mills, the Lady Bucs were forced to play catch up after falling behind by a 19-9 score after one quarter of action.

The Lady Bucs outscored Spring Mills by a 14-7 margin in the second quarter cutting the deficit down to three at the break, at 26-23.

The two teams played an even third quarter with both squads scoring nine points as the Lady Bucs still trailed by three heading into the final quarter, at 35-32.

Spring Mills won the final quarter by a 16-14 margin and held on for a five-point win.

Maxwell led the offense for B-U with 11 points.

Jada Brooks had 18 points for Spring Mills.

The Lady Bucs, now 2-2, will return to action Friday night as they visit Parkersburg South for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Following that contest, they will travel to Lincoln on Dec. 28.
