Basketball Bucs split games with Liberty and Fairmont Senior

Zach White (22) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers goes up for a lay-up while being defended by Liberty’s Noah McKim (24) during their Big 10 Conference contest last Tuesday at the high school. White had a double-double with a team-high 17 points and 12 rebounds in the Bucs’ 70-52 win.

TENNERTON – Zach White posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to help his Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers to a convincing 70-52 home win over the Liberty Mountaineers Tuesday night at the high school gym.

White was red-hot from the floor making eight of his 10 field goal attempts.

The Bucs trailed early to the Mountaineers by a 7-2 score, but a 14-0 run catapulted them into a 16-7 lead with under a minute go in the opening quarter.

Liberty ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to make it an 18-14 game after eight minutes of action.

Josh Loudin scored the first four points of the second quarter and White dropped in a jumper to extend the B-U lead out to 10, at 24-14.

A lay-up by Noam Keith gave the Bucs their biggest lead of the first half, at 12, at 32-20 and they went into the intermission up 32-22.

Liberty scored the first basket of the second half but a short jumper by Harrison Walker and an old-fashioned three-point play by White gave the Bucs a 37-24 lead with a minute gone in the quarter.

Leading 40-29, the Bucs went on a 10-0 run behind a pair of baskets from White and three-pointers from Walker and Ryan Hurst.

That pushed the B-U lead to 21, at 50-29.

Liberty ended the quarter on an 11-5 run making it a 55-40 contest heading into the last stanza.

The Mountaineers managed to whittle the B-U lead down to 10, at 59-49, with 5:22 remaining in the game.

The B-U defense came to life after that allowing the Mountaineers just one field goal the rest of the way, a three-pointer, as they closed out the game on an 11-3 run.

Following White in the scoring column were Ryan Hurst with 16 points, Walker with 13 and Loudin with 10.

The Bucs shot an impressive 53.5 percent for the game (31-for-58) and had a massive rebounding edge of the Mountaineers by a 48-17 margin.

Liberty, who dropped to 1-4 on the season, was led by Isaac Walker’s 21 points and Jordan Jones’ 20 points.

The Bucs picked up the ball again Thursday going against the Class AAA fifth-ranked Fairmont Senior Polar Bears on the road.

The Bucs suffered a 74-59 setback in a game that was much closer throughout than the final score indicated as the Bucs let the game get away from them in the final two minutes of action.

The Bucs may have played their best quarter of basketball against the unbeaten Polar Bears in the second quarter.

The Bucs trailed heading into the second quarter by a 23-16 margin but completely shut down the Polar Bears holding them to just two field goals and six points in in the stanza.

Down 26-25 in the second quarter, the Bucs took their first lead after a Lamar Hurst jumper and Ryan Hurst followed with a trey giving B-U a 30-26 lead.

Fairmont Senior tossed in a three-pointer making it a one-point game, but Ryan Hurst nailed another three and Walker uncorked a three at the buzzer to give the Bucs a seven-point lead at the half, at 36-29.

The Polar Bears scored the first six points of the third quarter to close the gap to one point, but Ryan Hurst went inside for a lay-up and uncorked another three-pointer to give the Bucs a 41-35 lead with 2:29 gone in the quarter.

Another three-pointer by Ryan Hurst kept the Bucs ahead by six at 46-40, but Fairmont Senior closed the quarter on an 11-2 run for a 51-48 lead going to the final quarter.

A basket by Lamar Hurst kept the Bucs to within one, at 55-54, with two minutes gone in the fourth but a 7-0 run by the Polar Bears gave them a 62-54 advantage.

A free throw by Lamar Hurst and a jumper by Walker pulled the Bucs to within five, at 62-57, with 3:12 left to play.

The Bucs couldn’t get any closer as the Polar Bears pulled away late finishing the game on a 12-2 run.

Ryan Hurst had a team-high 19 points while Lamar Hurst added 10.

Fairmont Senior was led by Jaelin Johnson dropping in 23 points and Zycheus Dobbs adding 20.

Fairmont Senior improved to 5-0 on the season.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 4-3 on the year as they visit East Fairmont today at 7:30 p.m.

It’s the only game scheduled this week for the Bucs but as of press time, they were seeking out games to play on Thursday and Saturday.
