Basketball Bucs outlast Preston for 72-64 victory

Ryan Hurst (1) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers drives past Preston’s Jaden Fultz for two of his team-high 14 points during the third quarter of their Big 10 Conference game Thursday in Kingwood. Hurst also added six assists, two rebounds and two steals. The Bucs improved to 3-4 with a 72-64 win.

KINGWOOD – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers had their best offensive showing of the year with a 72-point output against the Preston Knights in a Big 10 Conference road game Thursday with a 72-64 victory.

The Bucs put four players in double digits as Ryan Hurst led the team in scoring with 14 points while Zach White had 13 and Dawson Lilly and Brayden Cutlip each scored 11 apiece.

Cutlip recorded a double-double as he added 10 rebounds.

“I say this time-and-time again, but Cutlip is a huge part of offense and if he keeps buying in to what we are doing he is going to be a dominate player for us,” remarked B-U head coach Travis Foster.

White just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds, all grabbed in the first half.

Lilly scored the first five points for the Buccaneers as they took an early 5-3 lead.

A lay-up by Ryan Strader gave the Bucs a six-point lead, at 15-9, with 2:09 left in the opening quarter.

The Bucs settled for a four-point lead at the end of the first-quarter, up 19-15.

With the Bucs getting several starters in foul trouble, Preston controlled the first six minutes of the second quarter outscoring B-U by a 19-11 margin taking a 34-30 lead.

Tyler Sandreth started a strong 90 second rally for B-U at the end of the half with a 3-pointer to make it a 34-33 game, White tipped in a putback and made a free throw after being fouled and scored on a jumper from inside the paint to give the Bucs a 38-34 lead at the break.

“We had three-players get into foul trouble early,” remarked Foster. “So, for our bench to play most of the second quarter and for us to still be up by four, you have to be happy with that. Zach White was a big part of that first half for us with 13 points and nine rebounds. He, as a sophomore, dominated the boards and carried us in that first half.”

Preston scored the first three points of the second half to close it to a 38-37 contest but Strader scored two from the inside and Jacob Loudin scored consecutive baskets to push the B-U lead to seven, at 44-37.

A 7-2 Preston run closed it to 46-44, but Loudin and Hurst scored on lay-ups to give the Bucs a 50-44 lead with 2:51 left in the quarter.

B-U maintained a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter at 52-47.

Preston made it a four-point game, at 60-56, with 4:36 remaining, but B-U took control of the game at that point going on a 11-2 run.

Hurst uncorked a 3-pointer, Lilly knocked down two free throws and Hurst came back for a lay-up to give the Bucs a 67-56 lead with 3:10 remaining.

Following a Preston time out, the Knights scored a basket, but Strader and Cutlip both scored on lay-ups and Cutlip tossed in a free throw to give the Bucs their biggest lead of the night, at 72-58, with 1:40 left in the game.

Preston closed the game on a 6-0 run, but it wasn’t enough as the Bucs won by eight.

“We played well but we have to get better with our defensive rebounding and our man-to-man defense or we are going to be in trouble,” stated Foster. “I thought our bench played well, but when we had our starting five out there and rolling, we were really too much for them.”

The Bucs shot the ball at 48.4 clip hitting on 30 of their 62 shots.

Preston was led by Corey Pyles who scored 21 points and Caleb Osborne who scored 12.

Preston dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big 10.

Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big 10.

The Bucs will return to action Thursday when they visit Grafton for a 7:30 p.m. start.
