Basketball Bucs fall late to Colts, 77-74

PHILIPPI – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer basketball lost a highly contested 77-74 outing to the Philip Barbour Colts Friday night at Philip Barbour High School.

The game was close throughout but the Bucs weren’t able to put the Colts away late.

Ryan Hurst started the game off with a three-pointer for the Bucs to give them an early 3-0 lead.

A baseline jumper by Josh Loudin kept the Bucs ahead by a 9-6 count at the 5:13 mark of the first quarter.

A Strader putback of a missed shot gave the Bucs a 16-10 lead with 90 seconds left in the opening quarter but then things got strange in the game.

After a free throw by Philip Barbour that made it a 16-11 contest, Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster was given a technical foul protecting one of his players.

The Colts cut into the B-U lead by the end of the first quarter, with the Bucs up just one point at 18-17.

With the game tied at 22-22, Strader had another put back to give the Bucs a 24-22 lead at the 5:30 mark.

Philip Barbour went on an 11-5 run for a 33-29 lead at the 2:53 mark of the second quarter but the Bucs ended the half on a 9-5 run to even things up at the break at 38-38.

The Bucs outscored the Colts by two in the third quarter and led going into the final quarter by a 57-55 score.

With 2:18 left to go in the game, Ryan Hurst made a free throw to put the Bucs down by just two, at 71-69.

Philip Barbour turned the ball over on their next possession and the Bucs took the ball down the court and scored on a Will McCauley lay-up to even the game at 71-71.

Thomas Knight gave the lead back to the Colts with a free throw, at 72-71 with 90 seconds remaining.

McCauley came back and unleashed a three-point baseline jumper from the corner to give the Bucs the lead back, at 74-71, with 52 seconds remaining.

The Bucs wouldn’t score again though as the Colts won the game at the free throw line in that final minute.

Ryan Hurst and Loudin led the Bucs with 18 points apiece.

Logan Ball had 16 for the Colts.

Philip Barbour improved to 6-7 on the season.

The Bucs dropped to 9-7 on the season.

They will look to end a three-game slide Wednesday Bridgeport.

That contest will start at 7:30 p.m.
