Basketball Bucs down Bees, 73-61, but fall to Robert C. Byrd, 57-46

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Lamar Hurst (13) brings the crowd to their feet with an alley oop dunk to start the second quarter in front of East Fairmont’s Avery Baker (33) during their Big 10 Conference contest Wednesday at the high school gym. Hurst scored 17 points and had five rebounds as the Bucs downed the Bees by a 73-61 score.

TENNERTON – It was a highlight among highlights.

Just seconds in the second quarter of their game with East Fairmont Wednesday night, Buckhannon-Upshur’s Ryan Hurst lobbed a pass over the basket to a charging Lamar Hurst who went up high to get it and slammed down the alley oop with authority bringing the Buccaneer crowd to their feet.

The play epitomized the entire game for the Bucs who won by a convincing 73-61 score in a contest that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.

The Buc got sloppy in the fourth quarter trying to run out the clock and shortening the game, allowing the Bees to trim a 24-point deficit down to 12 at the final buzzer.

The Bucs trailed late in the first quarter by a 12-10 score by Lamar Hurst uncorked a three-pointer, Josh Loudin scored in the paint and Ryan Strader put in a lay-up to give the Bucs a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, and it was a lead they would never relinquish.

With the Bucs nursing a 23-19 lead after a 5-0 run by the Bees, Foster called a time out to settle his Bucs and they took control of the game from there.

Following the time-out, the Bucs went on a 20-2 run to open a huge 43-21 lead with a minute left in the half.

The Bucs took a 45-23 with them into the break.

Loudin scored the final two point of the third quarter, giving the Bucs their biggest lead of the game, at 62-38.

The Bees took advantage of the Bucs trying to slow the game down and cut it to a nine-point game with 45 seconds remaining, at 67-58.

The Bucs, however, closed the game on a 6-3 run for the 12-point victory.

Ryan Hurst led the Bucs with 19 points while Lamar Hurst and Loudin each added 17 points.

Strader grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to go along with seven points.

Luke Pollock had a game-high 26 points for the Bees.

Facing the seventh-ranked team in Class AA on Friday night, the Eagles used their quickness to race out to a 22-10 lead after one-quarter of play.

The Bucs managed to hang around in the second quarter.

Down 28-19, Noam Keith scored on a short jumper and Will McCauley scored on a rebound to make it a 28-23 contest.

After a basket by the Eagles, Keith ended the half with a jumper in the paint to make it a 30-25 contest.

The Bucs couldn’t get any closer as the Eagles doubled them up in the third quarter by a 20-10 score.

That left the Bucs down by a 50-35 count heading into the final quarter.

Down 54-40 with four minutes left to play, the Bucs went on an 6-3 run to close the gap to 57-46 with 2:33 left in the game

Neither team could score in that final 2:33 as the Eagles won by 11.

McCauley led the Bucs with 15 points while Ryan Hurst had 13.

Gavin Kennedy had 21 points to lead the Eagles.

The split left the Bucs with a 9-5 record overall and a 6-4 record in the Big 10 Conference.

The Bucs will be off until Wednesday when they host Morgantown at 7:30 p.m.

They will close out the week with a road game at Philip Barbour on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
