Basketball Bucs come out slow against Lincoln in 47-43 setback

Tyler Sandreth (12) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers drives past a Lincoln defender to the basket during the second half of their Big 10 Conference outing Wednesday evening at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Sandreth had five points and three assists, but the Bucs dropped a 47-43 decision.

BUCKHANNON – It was a disappointing effort from the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers in a 47-43 setback to the Lincoln Cougars in a Big 10 Conference affair Wednesday night at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Bucs came out flat in the first half and fell behind by 14 points.

To their credit, the Bucs made a game of it in the second half but still wound up dropping a four-point decision.

“We couldn’t make a shot, we couldn’t get into our transition game and we were in foul trouble again early on,” remarked a dejected Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster after the game.

The Bucs were down by a 5-0 score before Ryan Hurst put them on the board two minutes into the game with a jumper in the paint.

Down 10-4, Ryan Strader made a free throw and came back with a lay-up to make it a 10-7 contest.

Lincoln scored four straight points before Hurst ended the quarter with a jumper making it a 14-9 game.

Lincoln scored nine of the first 11 points of the second quarter for a 23-11 lead with 5:02 remaining in the half.

Down 27-13, the Bucs dialed up a couple of three-pointers to end the half.

Tyler Sandreth uncorked one with 2:11 left, and after a Lincoln basket, Hurst drained one with 17 seconds remaining as the Bucs closed the deficit to 29-19 at the break.

With Lincoln up 34-22 at the 4:41 mark in the third quarter, Zach White scored on a lay-up, Sandreth darted inside for two points and Lamar Hurst capped off a 6-0 run with a pair of free throws to make it a 34-28 contest with 2:24 left to play in the third.

A put back by Ryan Hurst and the end of the quarter kept the Bucs down by seven heading into the final stanza at 39-32.

Lincoln pushed their lead back to 10, at 45-35, with two minutes gone in the final stanza.

Ryan Hurst kept the Bucs in the game with a trey at the 5:49 mark and Lamar Hurst put in a rebound as the hosts cut the deficit to five, at 45-40, with five minutes remaining.

The game took a strange turn as neither team scored over the next four minutes of action.

With under a minute left, Lincoln missed the front end of a 1 + 1 situation at the free throw straight times but again the Bucs couldn’t find any offense.

Ending the almost five-minute scoring drought for both teams, Lamar Hurst nailed a three-pointer for the Bucs making it a 45-43 game with 28 seconds left.

The Bucs immediately fouled the Cougars, who missed two more free throws but B-U came up empty on their next possession.

Lincoln made one of two at the foul line on their next possession making it 46-43, keeping it a one possession game for the Bucs.

Following a B-U time-out, the Bucs got off a game-tying three-pointer but it wouldn’t go down.

Lincoln added one more free throw to wrap up the scoring.

The Bucs shot just 34 percent from the floor connecting on 15 of their 44 shots.

Ryan Hurst led the offense with 16 points while Lamar Hurst added 10.

Ryan Leep led Lincoln with 11 points while Zach Snyder collected 10.

Lincoln improved to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Big 10.

The Bucs dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big 10.

They will return to action tonight as they host Preston at 7:30 p.m.
