Basketball Buccaneers battle No. 1 Hawks but drop 75-58 decision

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers has nothing to be ashamed of in their recent contest when No. 1 University came to town Monday evening.

The Bucs gave effort and heart and battled, but untimely lost a 75-58 decision to the top-rated Hawks.

“Honestly, without looking at the score, I thought it was a good night,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster. “I thought we got better and we learned a lot in this game. We saw some weaknesses that we need to address, but we had a lot of young guys, sophomores and juniors playing against the defending state champs and a roster loaded with seniors, I thought it was a good game for us and we will build off of it.”

The Bucs were down by a 12-3 score before Will McCauley put in a lay-up and Lamar Hurst grabbed a rebound and put it in to make it a 12-7 game contest.

University’s Mike Maumbe put in a pair of free throws to make it a 14-7 game after one-quarter of action.

University pushed their lead to 10, at 21-11, but Ryan Strader scored on a put back, Ryan Hurst went inside for a lay-up and Lamar Hurst scored on a baseline jumper to cap a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four, at 21-17, with 4:33 left in the half.

The Bucs were down by eight, at 29-21, but Ryan Hurst uncorked a three-pointer, and after K. J. McClung made a lay-up, McCauley put in two foul shots to keep the Bucs down by five at the break, at 31-26.

University put the game out of reach with a 13-0 run to start the third quarter, making it a 44-26 contest.

McCauley ended the run with a jumper, but the Bucs were down 16, at 44-28, with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

University took their biggest lead of the game, at 21 points, at, 58-37, following a three-pointer by John Mazza.

Josh Loudin ended the quarter with a basket making it a 58-39 contest.

Down by 24, at 63-39, Lamar Hurst slammed home a dunk and Zach White scored on a lay-up, and after a University basket by Kaden Metheny, Lamar Hurst turned in an old-fashioned three-pointer making it a 65-46 game with three minutes gone.

University went on a 6-0 run making it a 71-46 game but the Bucs closed on a 12-4 run to end the game.

“This game doesn’t change anything for us,” stated Foster. “We are still where we want to be right now. University has beaten a lot of teams this season by a lot more points that we allowed tonight. They have dominated teams. For us to keep battling, I am proud of the guys. This was a great test for us to see where we are at.”

Ryan Hurst led the Bucs with 17 points while Lamar Hurst tallied 15.

Loudin scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds.

McClung scored a game-high 24 points while Metheny added 20 and Aaron Forbes 11.

University improved to 18-3 on the season.

The Bucs dropped to 12-9 overall.

They were slated to wrap up their regular season Wednesday night at against Lewis County.

They will begin sectional play Wednesday against Morgantown.
