Basketball Bobcats fall on the road to Glenville State by a 91-71 score


GLENVILLE – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats simply couldn’t keep up with the Glenville State Pioneer offense in a 91-71 defeat Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference clash at the Waco Center.

Glenville State made 16 three-pointers and overall shot the ball at 54 percent for the game.

Clay Todd scored the first four points of the game to give Wesleyan an early lead and Daylin Lee hit a three-pointer to keep Wesleyan ahead by a 9-8 score with five minutes gone.

Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, it was the last lead they would hold in the game.

The Pioneers went on a 14-4 run for a 22-13 lead and never looked back.

A jumper by Steven Verplancken extended the Pioneers lead to 14, at 32-18 with 7:54 left in the first half.

A lay-up by Vicentic capped a 12-4 run for Wesleyan bringing the ‘Cats to within six, at 36-30, with 3:32 remaining in the half.

Glenville State pushed the lead back to 11 however at the half, at 44-33.

Another lay-up by Vicentic brought Wesleyan to within eight, at 47-39, with three minutes gone in the second half.

A jumper by Marcus Larsson kept Wesleyan down by eight, at 62-54, with 8:51 left but they couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Glenville State went on a flourish over the next five minutes with a 26-10 run opening up their biggest lead of the game with an 88-64 advantage with two minutes left.

Wesleyan closed the game on a 7-3 run.

Larsson came of the bench to lead the ‘Cats with 15 points while Vicentic added 14 and Lee 13.

Hegel Augustin and Steven Verplancken each had 19 points to pace the Glenville State offense.

Glenville State improved to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the MEC.

Wesleyan dropped to 6-10 overall and 5-5 in the MEC.

The Bobcats will return to action Wednesday when they host Frostburg State at 7:30 p.m.
