Basketball Bobcats can’t slow down red-hot Concord in 98-83 setback


ATHENS – Luka Petrovic scored 22 points and Dusan Vicentic 21 for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats Saturday in their Mountain East Conference clash with the homestanding Concord Mt. Lions, but it wasn’t enough to pull out a victory as the ‘Cats dropped a 98-83 decision.

The ‘Cats were never able to slow down a red-hot Concord offense that shot 64 percent for the game and 60 percent from behind the three-point arc.

Wesleyan fell behind by a 12-5 score after three minutes of action and were still down by seven, at 18-11, at the 13:20 mark.

Petrovik scored a jumper, Daylin Lee went inside for a lay-up and Petrovic capped a 7-0 run with a trey deadlocking the game at 18-18 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

Down 22-21, Marcus Larsson gave Wesleyan their first lead, at 24-22, with 8:53 remaining in the half.

Up by a 26-24 score, Wesleyan allowed Concord to go on an 8-0 run as they retook the lead, at 32-26, with six minutes remaining in the opening half.

Wesleyan’s Clay Todd interrupted the run bringing the ‘Cats to within three, at 32-29, at the 5:44 mark.

Concord ended the half on a 15-7 run for a 47-36 lead at the break.

Brandon Kennedy hit a three-pointer for Concord to start the second half, but Petrovic made a jumper and came back with a trey of his own narrowing the lead down to nine, at 50-41, with 90 seconds elapsed.

A lay-up by Ross Young kept Wesleyan down by 12, at 55-43, with 17:20 showing on the second-half clock.

Concord started to pull away over the next four minutes with a 16-4 run taking a 71-47 lead with 13:11 remaining.

Larsson knocked down a jumper and Lee launched in a three-pointer for Wesleyan cutting the lead down to 19, at 71-52, at the 12:22 mark.

An 8-0 run by Concord quickly put the gap back to 27, at 79-52.

Concord pushed their lead out to 29, at 85-56, with 8:48 remaining.

Wesleyan went on a 11-0 run capped by a lay-up by Todd, shrinking the Concord lead down to 18, at 85-67, with 5:29 left in the contest.

A pair of free throws by Vicentic cut it down to a 14-point deficit, at 86-72, with 3:38 remaining.

Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer as Concord answered with an 8-0 run opening up a 22-point lead again, at 94-72, with 2:42 remaining.

Wesleyan ended the game on an 11-4 run.

Trailing Petrovic and Vicentic in the Wesleyan scoring column were Todd and Lee with 13 points each.

Kennedy led Concord with 22 points while Trey Brisco had 19.

Malik Johnson chipped in 16 points for the Mt. Lions.

Concord improved to 10-16 overall and 7-12 in the MEC.

Wesleyan dropped to 10-16 overall and 9-11 in the MEC.

The Bobcats will return to action Wednesday when they visit Fairmont State for a 7:30 p.m. conference outing.

They will wrap up their regular season Saturday hosting Davis & Elkins in a league battle at 4 p.m.
