Baseball ‘Cats takes two games from West Liberty, 7-3 and 9-5

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team took care of business against the three-win West Liberty Hilltoppers here Sunday in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Hank Ellis Field.

The Bobcats took game one by a 7-3 score and earned a 9-5 victory in the second outing.

The sweep improved the Bobcats of head coach Randy Tenney to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in the MEC.

In game one, West Liberty scored first in the top of the second but Wesleyan responded with four runs in their half of the inning.

Ben Fulks had a RBI on a ground out, Ryan Kiser hit a two-run single and Tanner McCallister had a one-run single.

Wesleyan extended their lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a Dominic Castello sacrifice fly and a Ben Fulks one-run single.

West Liberty pushed across a run in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-2 contest, but Castello hit a sacrifice fly that scored Eric Forbrick to give Wesleyan a 7-2 lead.

West Liberty scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh.

Wesleyan cracked out eight hits with Forbrick and Antonio Vega each getting two.

Michael Maiolo improved his record to 3-1 with a six-inning effort. He allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out three.

Castello pitched the seventh inning allowing one run on one hit.

In game two, Wesleyan erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first sending 11 batters to the plate.

During the inning, Forbrick smacked a one-run double, Vega a two-run single, two runners scored on an error and one on a ground out by Greg Smith.

West Liberty chased across two runs in the top of the second and two in the third to cut the game to 6-4.

Kiser hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to extend the Wesleyan lead to 7-4.

Fulks hit a one-run single in the bottom of the fifth and Eric Forbrick added a one-run single in the bottom of the sixth to up the Wesleyan lead to 9-4.

West Liberty scored a run in the top of the seventh but couldn’t get any closer than four runs.

Wesleyan collected nine hits in the win with Vega getting three and Forbrick two.

Castello pitched a complete game to up his record to 3-1.

He gave up four earned runs on 10 hits while walking two and fanning five.

The two losses dropped West Liberty to 3-17 overall and 2-6 in the MEC.

Wesleyan was scheduled to play Salem in a non-conference game Tuesday.

They will return to action Saturday in a MEC doubleheader at Urbana.

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
