Baseball ‘Cats swept in twin bill opener at Wheeling

WHEELING – Following the postponement of four doubleheaders, the West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team was finally able to play this past Saturday opening their 2021 season with a road doubleheader with the Wheeling Cardinals.

The Bobcats were swept in the twin bill, losing both games by a 6-3 score.

Wheeling had a bit of an advantage entering the doubleheader as they had already played 10 games.

Wesleyan trailed in game one by a 5-0 score before plating a run in the top of the fourth inning.

With runners on the corners for Wesleyan, Sam Ingram attempted a steal of second base. The throw from the catcher wound up in the outfield allowing Eric Forbrick, who earlier singled, to trot home from third base.

Wheeling added another run in the bottom of the fifth making it a 6-1 game.

Wesleyan tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Forbrick started the inning with a walk, Nick Grotti singled him to third, and Ingram laced a single to left field bringing Forbrick home.

Trahern White loaded the bases with a walk and Geobani Sostre hit into a fielder’s choice allowing Grotti to score.

Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer though as Wheeling brought in reliever Albert Baez and he retired the ‘Cats in order in the top of the seventh.

Wesleyan had six hits with Grotti leading the offense with two.

Kyle Riggleman got the start for the Bobcats and suffered the loss.

He went two innings and gave up two earned runs on one hit.

Wesleyan was their own worst enemy in the second game committing six errors and leaving 13 runners on base.

They fell behind by a 6-0 score after four innings of play.

They finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Cole Shearer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Forbrick. It was the only run they could muster as they left the bases loaded.

They added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Tanner McCallister drew a one-out walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

That made it a 6-2 game.

Wesleyan threatened in the top of the seventh scoring a run when Dylan Poplin drew a one-out bases loaded walk that scored Andrew Walker, but again, Wesleyan managed just the one run leaving the bases loaded as Baez came in for Wheeling and recorded the final two outs.

Wesleyan out hit Wheeling by a 7-3 margin.

Bryson Fluke and Forbrick each had two hits for Wesleyan.

Mitchell Courtney took the loss for Wesleyan in a relief role.

He tossed one inning and gave up one hit and one walk while allowing two unearned runs.

Wesleyan was slated to play West Liberty yesterday after their doubleheader was rained out on Sunday.

The ‘Cats will return to the diamond Friday hosting Alderson Broaddus in a twin bill at 1 p.m.
