Baseball ‘Cats still seeking first win of the season


WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats continue to search for their first win of the season during their spring break trip of Florida.

The ‘Cats played three games on Sunday and Monday and came up short in all three.

On Sunday, they lost a 12-5 decision to the University of the Sciences and then on Monday, the played Grand Valley State in a doubleheader losing game one by a 5-3 score and the nightcap by an 18-2 score.

The trio of games left the ‘Cats with a 0-10 mark.

In Sunday’s battle with USciences, the Cats fell behind by a 3-0 score after two innings of action.

They tied the game with a trio of runs in the top of the third and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Bryson Fluke that scored Tanner McCallister in the top of the fourth giving the a 4-3 advantage.

USciences retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third and put the game away with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Wesleyan tacked on a final run in the top of the ninth when Adrian Delgado hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Fluke.

Wesleyan had 11 hits in the setback with Fluke, Todd Burner, Sam Ross and Nick Grotti each getting two apiece.

Parker Tallman (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound for Wesleyan.

He started the game and went 4 1/3 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits.

All of the scoring in Monday’s first game with Grand Valley State happened in the sixth inning.

Grand Valley State chased across all five of their runs in the top of the inning.

Wesleyan countered with their three runs in the bottom of the inning when Grotti hit a one-run single and Griffin Roe hit a two-run double.

Wesleyan outhit Grand Valley State by a 7-5 margin.

Fluke paced the offense with two hits.

Mitchell Courtney absorbed the loss for Wesleyan.

He went six innings and gave up five earned runs on four hits while fanning six.

Little went right for the Bobcats in the second game as they lost by 16 runs.

They committed five errors and gave up six unearned runs.

Grand Valley State scored four times in the bottom of the first for a 4-0 lead.

Wesleyan countered with two runs when Geovani Sostre knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice and Flue had one-run single to center field.

That made it a 4-2, but it was the only inning Wesleyan would score.

Grand Valley State scored three in the bottom of the second and added six more in the bottom of the third for a 13-2 lead.

They added one more in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth to round out the score.

Wesleyan had seven hits in the loss with Fluke leading the offense with two.

Roe suffered the loss in a start going 2 2/3 innings.

He gave up seven earned runs on six hits while walking seven.

They Bobcats were slated to play Cedarville on Tuesday and then the University of Minnesota Crookston and Embry-Riddle University on Wednesday.

They will play the University of Sciences again today at 1:30 p.m. and then square off against the University of Sioux Falls Friday for a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m.
