Baseball ‘Cats start season with 0-4 mark at Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH (SC) – It wasn’t the start to the season that the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team was hoping for on a weekend trek to Myrtle Beach for a pair of double headers against the Pitt Johnstown Mountain Cats.

The Bobcats went 0-4 dropping all four non-conference contests.

On Friday, they dropped a 10-7 decision in their opener and followed that up with a 13-10 setback in game two.

Saturday’s action saw Wesleyan lose a 3-1 outing in game one and a 9-4 contest in game two.

In Friday’s first game, Wesleyan was held hitless for five innings and fell behind by a 7-0 score.

Pitt Johnstown added three more runs in the top of the sixth for a 10-0 lead.

Wesleyan finally got their first hit and on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Kolby Wolf started the inning getting hit by a pitch and Griffin Roe walked with one out putting a pair of runners on for Wesleyan.

An error on a ball hit by Luke Burner scored both runners and Burner later scored on a single by Tanner McCallister as the ‘Cats made it a 10-3 lead.

They made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with a four-run outburst.

Bryson Fluke started the inning with a single and scored on a wild pitch, Sam Ross and Josh Petit both walked and scored on Wolf’s two-run double and Wolf scored on a single by Grotti, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Mountain Cats.

Wesleyan was outhit by a 13-4 margin as Wolf had two of the four Bobcat hits.

Julio Medina suffered the loss for Wesleyan.

He started the game and lasted three innings giving up five earned runs on six hits while striking out five.

In the nightcap, Wesleyan took an early lead when Adrian Delgado had a one-run double that scored Griffin Roe in the first inning and Burner hit a two-run single to right field in the second inning that plated Sam Ingram and Dylan Gump to treat Wesleyan to a 3-0 lead.

Pitt-Johnstown got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third but Wesleyan scored two more in their half of the inning when Ingram hit a two-run single.

That treated Wesleyan to a 5-1 lead.

Pitt Johnstown tied it with four runs in the top of the fifth but Wesleyan answered with two runs in their half of the fourth when Nick Grotti hit a two-run home run to right field.

That put Wesleyan back up by a 7-4 score.

Pitt Johnstown scored one in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh for a 13-7 lead.

Burner hit a three-run home run for the ‘Cats in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.

Wesleyan had seven hits in the contest with Burner leading the way with two to go along with five runs-batted-in.

Mitchell Courtney suffered the loss for Wesleyan.

He started the game and went three innings and he gave up just one earned run on three hits while walking two.

Saturday’s first game saw the two teams combine for just four runs and nine hits.

Pitt Johnstown scored a run in the bottom of the first and second innings for a 2-0 advantage.

Wesleyan’s lone run came in the top of the fourth when Grotti singled to right field bringing home Bryson Fluke.

Pitt Johnstown added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.

Fluke, Delgado, Grotti and Ingram each had a hit for the ‘Cats.

Parker Tallman started the contest for Wesleyan and absorbed the loss.

He went four innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out one.

In game two on Saturday, Pitt-Johnstown chased across four runs in the top of the first and three more in the bottom of the third for a 7-0 lead.

Wesleyan dented the scoreboard for two runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run double by Evin Hurt to make it a 7-2 contest.

Pitt Johnstown scored two more in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-2 lead.

Wesleyan scored two in the top of the seventh on RBI’s by Grotti and Wolf.

Wesleyan outhit Pitt-Johnstown by a 10-9 margin.
