Baseball ‘Cats lose final three games in Florida

WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team were not able to build on their first win of the season this past Thursday against the University of the Sciences.

The ‘Cats ended a 12-game losing streak with the win, but the momentum wasn’t capitalized on as they were outscored by a 33-3 score in their final three games in Florida on Friday and Saturday.

They dropped a doubleheader to the University of Sioux Falls on Friday (10-0 and 17-2) and then wrapped up their spring break trip Saturday with a 6-1 loss to Saint Anselm College.

The trio of losses left Wesleyan with a 1-15 record.

Sioux Falls came into the doubleheader with just a 1-5 record but dominated the Bobcats in the both games.

Wesleyan gave up just five hits in their 10-0 loss to Sioux Falls in game one but walked 18 batters in the setback.

Sioux Falls scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back.

Wesleyan fell behind by a 17-0 score before avoiding another shutout with two runs in the final inning on a pair of ground out RBIs by Kolby Wolf and Leo White.

Wesleyan again collected just three hits as they went to Andrew Walker, Evin Hurt and White.

Parker Tallman (0-3) suffered the loss in a starting role for the ‘Cats.

He went 4 1/3 innings and gave up nine earned runs on 15 hits while walking two and striking out four.

In Saturday’s final game in Florida, Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead over Saint Anselm in the top of bottom of the second on a one-run single by Giovani Sostre.

Wesleyan couldn’t hold the lead as Saint Anselm scored three in the top of the fourth and put the game away with three in the top of the eighth for the 6-1 win.

Wesleyan committed four errors in the contest.

Both teams had nine hits.

Delgado led Wesleyan with two hits.

Mitchell Courtney (0-3) took the loss for Wesleyan as he lasted five innings and didn’t give up an earned run on five hits while striking out five.
