Baseball ‘Cats have rough outings against MEC league-leading Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON – It was rough two days for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team in Charleston this past weekend as they dropped a pair of doubleheaders to the Mountain East Conference’s best team in the University of Charleston Golden Eagles.

Wesleyan was outscored 40-8 in the four games as they dropped all four contests.

On Saturday, they lost a 15-3 decision in the opener and then were one-hit in a 2-0 shutout in the night cap.

Sunday’s action saw them drop game one 11-4 and game two, 12-1.

Wesleyan took the lead in game on Saturday when Tyler Ostendorf singled home Cade Leach in the top of the second, but Charleston answered with a six-run second inning for a 6-1 lead.

Geonvani Sostre hit a ground out RBI for Wesleyan in the top of the third to make it a 6-2 contest.

Charleston scored a run in the bottom of the third, five in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth for a 15-2 lead.

Wesleyan wrapped up the scoring in the seventh with an unearned run.

The ‘Cats had just four hits in the game as Eric Forbrick, Sostre, Leach and Ostendorf each had one.

Parker Tallman (2-2) suffered the loss for Wesleyan as he got the start and went just three innings giving up seven earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two.

In Saturday’s second game, Wesleyan’s lone hit belonged to Leach with one out in the top of the seventh inning.

Charleston scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Mitchell Courtney (0-4) pitched well for Wesleyan but suffered the setback on the mound.

He went the distance and gave up two earned runs on seven hits while whiffing five.

In Sunday’s opener, Wesleyan scored first again on a Leach one-run single but found themselves down by an 8-1 score after two innings of play.

Bryson Fluke and Ostendorf each knocked in a run for Wesleyan in the top of third closing the gap to 8-3.

Charleston extended their lead to 11-3 before Wesleyan’s Hunter Eplin hit a home run to left field wrapping up the scoring.

Wesleyan collected six hits with Eplin getting two of them.

Michael Maiolo (0-1) started the game and lasted just 1/3 of an inning as he gave up five earned runs on three hits. He was one of six pitchers used by Wesleyan.

Wesleyan’s lone run in the second game Sunday came in the third inning when Sam Ingram knocked home Nick Grotti with a single to right field.

Wesleyan had six hits in the game-two setback.

Eplin (0-1) absorbed the loss going four innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits.

The action left Wesleyan with a 3-11 record heading into Wednesday’s home doubleheader with Frostburg State.

Game one will begin at 1 p.m.
