Baseball ‘Cats go winless at Shepherd and Fairmont State in MEC contests

BRIDGEPORT – It was a rough two days for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team as they opened Mountain East Conference play getting swept by the Shepherd Rams and the Fairmont State Falcons.

Wesleyan fell to Shepherd on Saturday, 4-1 and 9-1, then on Sunday the lost a pair to Fairmont State, 5-4 and 5-3.

In Saturday’s opener with Shepherd at Fairfax Field, Wesleyan scored first in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly by Alex Skinner that scored Antonio Vega.

Wesleyan would be kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way as Shepherd took the lead in their half of the second with a pair of runs and then added another in the bottom of the third for a 3-1 advantage.

The Rams added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Eddie Nottingham singled home Christian Hamel.

Wesleyan collected six hits in the contest with Vega leading the way with two.

Jake Bishop saw his record fall to 2-3 as he went 4 2/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out one.

In game two, Wesleyan again took the early lead after Ryan Kiser singled home Greg Smith in the top of the first.

The lead was short-lived as Shepherd scored three in their half of the first and one more in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 lead.

A Syeed Mahdi three-run home run highlighted a five-run fourth inning for the Rams.

That put Wesleyan down by a 9-1 score and would wind up being the final as neither team crossed home plate in the final three innings.

Vega led Wesleyan’s offense again with two of their four hits.

Griffin Roe started the contest for Wesleyan and suffered the loss.

He lasted four innings and gave up nine earned runs on eight hits while walking four and fanning seven.

Sunday’s first game with Fairmont State, played at the Bridgeport Recreational Complex, took 11 innings to decide a winner.

Fairmont scored three times in the bottom of the first for a 3-0 lead, but Wesleyan answered with a four-run fourth inning.

The big hit in the inning belonged to Eric Forbrick who smacked a two-run home run to right center field while Tanner McCallaister and Greg Smith each had one-run singles.

That gave Wesleyan a 4-3 lead, but Fairmont State deadlocked the game in their half of the fourth on a Kevin Ayala single that scored Chris Green for an unearned run.

The game stayed tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the 11th when Ayala hit an inside the park home run to give the Falcons the win.

Wesleyan amassed nine hits in the contest with Smith and Nick Grotti each getting two apiece.

The second outing saw all eight runs scored in two innings between the Falcons and Bobcats.

Fairmont State chased across five runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-0 lead.

Wesleyan scored their three in the top of the fifth inning.

Smith walked and later scored on an error and both Forbrick and Ryan Kiser hit sacrifice flies to bring in a run to make it a 5-3 game.

Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer in the final two innings as the score remained, 5-3.

Wesleyan mustered just four hits in the loss with Jonathan Cintron, Forbrick, Bryson Fluke and Grotti each getting one each.

Hunter Rotarius saw his record fall to 0-2 in a complete-game effort.

He gave up just two earned runs on seven hits and walked four.

The weekend action left Randy Tenney’s ‘Cats with a 7-13 record overall and a 0-4 mark in the MEC.

They will return to action Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
