Baseball ‘Cats get first win of season after beating USciences, 4-3


AUBURNDALE (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball program ended their 12-game losing streak to start the season with a 4-3 win over the University of the Sciences on Thursday.

It was a measure of revenge for the ‘Cats as they lost a 12-5 decision to the University of the Sciences back on Sunday.

Two days prior, the Bobcats lost an 11-4 decision to Cedarville and on Wednesday, they lost a pair of games to the University of Minnesota Crookston (7-3) and No. 13 Embry-Riddle University (14-2).

The four games left Wesleyan with a 1-12 record.

In Thursday’s win over University of the Sciences, Wesleyan raced out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of play.

They scored twice in the bottom of the first behind an Adrian Delgado sacrifice fly and a one-run double by Griffin Roe.

A two-run single by Sam Ingram in the bottom of the second inning gave the ‘Cats their 4-0 lead.

USciences would cut into the lead with a run in the top of the third and the top of the seventh making it a 4-2 game.

Joe Duffy hit a solo home run for USciences to lead off the top of the ninth to close it to a 4-3 game but Wesleyan reliever Mitchell Courtney closed the door on them the rest of the inning to preserve the win.

Wesleyan was outhit in the contest by a 9-6 margin as Ingram collected two.

Anthony Napoleon (1-1) earned the win going seven innings.

He allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out one.

In their Tuesday loss to Cedarville, Wesleyan had six hits and four errors.

They took an early 2-0 in the top of the first behind a two-run single by Nick Grotti.

Cedarville answered with three runs in the bottom of the first taking a 3-2 lead.

Wesleyan tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the fourth after Sam Ross hit a one-run double.

Cedarville took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth making it a 5-3 contest but Wesleyan scored a run in the top of the fifth when Grotti hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bryson Fluke and closing the gap to 5-4.

Wesleyan didn’t score the rest of the way as Cedarville scored three in the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the seventh innings.

Fluke and Ingram each had two hits for Wesleyan.

Julio Medina (0-2) suffered the loss for Wesleyan.

He started the game and went four innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits.

In Wednesday’s first game with Crookston, the ‘Cats fell behind by a 2-0 score after four innings.

Wesleyan got on the board in the top of the fifth when Ingram hit a one-run single making it a 2-1 contest.

Crookston scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the seventh taking a 6-1 lead.

Wesleyan cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the eighth when Griffin Roe hit a two-run double.

Crookston added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Brock Reller solo home run.

Grotti and Roe each had two hits for Wesleyan.

Robbie Baker suffered the loss going six innings for Wesleyan.

He gave up two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.

In the nightcap on Wednesday, the Bobcats fell behind No. 13 Embry-Riddle by a 9-0 score after five innings of play.

Wesleyan scored their two runs in the bottom of the fifth with Sam Ross and Fluke each knocking in a run.

That made it a 9-2 contest.

Embry-Riddle chased across five runs in the top of the ninth to wrap up the scoring.

Fluke paced the Wesleyan offense with three hits.

Kyle Riggleman (0-1) suffered the loss going five innings and allowing nine earned runs on eight hits.

The Bobcats were slated to play the University of Sioux Falls in a doubleheader on Friday and will wrap up their spring break trip today against Saint Anselm College.

First pitch for that game is slated for 9:15 a.m.
