Baseball ‘Cats end slide with win over Frostburg State in twin bill

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats ended their 12-game losing streak with a dominating 16-6 win over Frostburg State in the first game of their Mountain East Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Hank Ellis Field.

The ‘Cats lost a pitcher’s duel in game two by a 2-1 score.

The Bobcats had a season-high 17 hits in the game-one victory.

Frostburg State scored first with a run in the top of the second, but Wesleyan’s Eric Forbrick scored on an error and Bryson Fluke singled home Trahern White in their half of the second for a 2-1 lead.

Frostburg State tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the third, but Wesleyan chased across five runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-2 lead.

Fluke, Geonvani Sostre and Adrian Delgado each had an RBI in the inning and Wesleyan scored one run on an error.

A sacrifice fly by Frostburg State’s Andrew Smith in the top of the fifth made it a 7-3 game but Wesleyan countered with a six-run fifth inning.

Forbrick hit a solo home run to centerfield, Sostre hit a one-run single, Fluke scored on a passed ball, Delgado hit a ground out RBI and Cade Leach hit a two-run single as Wesleyan took a 13-3 lead.

Wesleyan increased their lead to 16-3 in the bottom of the sixth as Dominic Lough, Nick Grotti and Cole Shearer each brought in a run.

Frostburg State wrapped up the scoring with a three-run seventh inning.

Fluke led the offense with four hits while Sostre and Forbrick each had three.

Anthony Napoleon (2-3) earned the win tossing 1 2/3 innings of relief.

He didn’t allow a run while giving up two hits.

Game two saw limited offense as both teams had four hits.

Bryce Jackson put Frostburg State on the board first with a one-run double in the top of the third but Sostre answered that run for the ‘Cats in their half of the third when he hit a one-run single that scored Tanner McCallister.

The game stayed at 1-1 until the top of the seventh when Jack Maruskin hit an infield single that scored Chase O’Dell for the game-winner.

Wesleyan went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sostre, Grotti, Forbrick and McCallister each had a hit for the ‘Cats.

The split left Frostburg State with a 10-21 record while Wesleyan is 4-20.

The ‘Cats will host Glenville State Saturday and Sunday in a pair of MEC doubleheaders.

The games start at 1 p.m. on both days.
