Baseball ‘Cats drop two to West Virginia State


INSTITUTE – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team dropped a road doubleheader to the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets Sunday afternoon.

They dropped game one by a 5-2 score and fell in game two by a 15-3 score.

The game two loss marked the ninth time in Wesleyan’s 20 games that they have given up 10 or more run in a contest.

The pair of losses left Wesleyan with a 3-17 record.

In game one, Matthew Kline hit a two-run home run and Andrew Masset hit a solo shot to in the bottom of the third to put the Yellow Jackets up by a 3-0 score.

A two-run double from Trey Junkins in the bottom of the fifth gave West Virginia State a 5-0 lead.

West Virginia Wesleyan scored twice in the top of the sixth behind a two-run single from Nick Grotti that scored Tanner McCallister and Bryson Fluke.

Wesleyan couldn’t mount a comeback in the seventh as they went down in order.

The ‘Cats collected just three hits in the loss with Grotti, Fluke and McCallister each getting one.

Anthony Napoleon (1-3) got the start for Wesleyan and went four innings.

He gave up three earned runs on six hits and struck out one.

Kyle Riggleman tossed the final two innings and allowed one earned run on two hits.

In game two, Wesleyan found themselves down by a 7-0 score after four innings of play.

Adrian Delgado put Wesleyan on the board with a one-run single in the top of the fifth, but West Virginia State had an eight-run fifth inning for a 15-1 lead.

Fluke hit a sacrifice fly that scored Cade Leach in the top of the sixth inning and Grotti hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh for Wesleyan.

Wesleyan had eight hits with Grotti getting three and Delgado two.

Jake Hakey (0-2) started the game for Wesleyan and was one of five pitchers used.

He allowed four earned runs on four hits going 1 2/3 innings.

Wesleyan was slated to play West Virginia State Monday in another road doubleheader.

They will return to the diamond Wednesday hosting Frostburg State in a twin bill stating at 1 p.m.
