Baseball Bucs win three in a row

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur baseball Buccaneers had a perfect week the week of April 19-24 picking up three wins.

The Bucs hosted Grafton that Monday and held on for a 7-6 win, they traveled to Clarksburg that Tuesday to face Liberty and won a 23-5 slaughter of the Mountaineers an then wrapped up the week that Friday entertaining Fairmont Senior and coming away with a 10-4 victory.

The three wins left head coach Adam Squires’ club with a 5-2 record.

In their contest with Grafton, the Bearcats put up two runs in the top of the first but the Bucs answered with three in their half of the first.

Ian Donnen started the inning with a single and Jay Burnside followed with a walk.

They both scored on a double to left field by Elijah Arbogast.

Arbogast later scored on an error to account for the scoring.

Grafton tied it with a run in the top of the second but the Bucs scored three more in the bottom of the second behind a two-run double from Isaac Lane and a one run single from Arbogast.

The Bucs made it 7-3 in the bottom of the third when Johnny Haddix doubled and later scored on a ground out.

Grafton tallied a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth to make it a 7-6 contest, but the Bucs never gave up the tying run to hold on for the victory.

The Bucs had 10 hits in the contest with Arbogast getting three while Lane and Haddix each had two.

Brady Hurst pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to get the win.

He didn’t give up a hit while striking out five.

In the Liberty win, the Bucs went ahead by a 2-0 score in the top of the first when Hurst hit a two-run single.

Liberty scored a run in their half of the first but the Bucs pushed across four runs in the top of the second for a 6-1 lead.

The Bucs managed three more runs in the top of the third for a 9-1 advantage.

Liberty managed two runs in the bottom of the third making it a 9-3 game but the Bucs erupted for a 10-run fourth inning sending 15 batters to the plate.

That gave them a 19-3 lead.

Liberty scored twice in the bottom of the fourth but the Bucs tacked on four more in the top of the fifth for a 23-5 lead.

The game was called after five innings on the mercy rule.

Tenney led the Bucs with two hits and five RBIs.

Eli Bryant had three hits while Ian Donnen, Burnside, Zach Calef-Boring, Johnny Haddix and Parker Browning each had two.

Josh Nesbitt earned the win tossing the first three innings allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out one.

Bryant pitched the final two innings not allowing an earned run on three hits while striking out three.

In their game against the Polar Bears, Fairmont Senior scored a run in the top of first but the Bucs answered with a five-run second inning on just two hits.

Tenney had a double in the inning while Browning had a single for the two hits.

Fairmont Senior pushed across two runs in the top of the third making it a 5-3 contest

It stayed 5-3 until the bottom of the fifth when the Bucs scored two runs when Zach White scored on a fielder’s choice and Calef-Boring scored on a bases loaded walk to make it a 7-3 contest.

The Polar Bears scored a run in the top of the sixth to close the game to 7-4, but the Bucs added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with Calef-Boring, Tenney, and Donnen each knocking in a run.

The Bucs had eight hits with Tenney leading the way with two hits and two RBIs.

Arbogast picked up the win tossing five innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits.

Lane pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on two hits.

The Bucs were slated to play East Fairmont, Robert C. Byrd and Elkins last week and Bridgeport on Tuesday.

They will host Lewis County today at 4:15 p.m.
