Baseball Bucs win regular-season finale with a wild 12-10 victory over Philip Barbour

Casey Hamner (5), shown here in a previous game against Elkins, hit a two-run home run against the Philip Barbour Colts on Friday to lead the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers to a 12-10 victory in their regular-season finale. The Bucs begin section play today against University.

PHILIPPI – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer baseball team ended a three-game losing streak and ended their regular season on a positive note with a high-scoring 12-10 road win against the Philip Barbour Colts Thursday evening.

A seven-run fourth inning highlighted the victory for the Bucs.

Buckhannon-Upshur took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Cole Hoover singled home Alek Seech.

Philip Barbour chased across four runs in the bottom of the first.

The Bucs quickly tied the game with three runs in the top of the second.

Logan Bailey hit a two-run double and Seech hit a sacrifice fly to account for the scoring.

The Colts took the lead right back with a three-run bottom of the second inning for a 7-4 advantage.

Elijah Arbogast was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the third for the Bucs to make it a 7-5 game.

The Bucs sent 12 batters to the plate in their seven-run fourth inning.

Tim Phillips hit a two-run single, Casey Hamner uncorked a two-home run over the left field fence, Logan Whitehair hit a one-run single, Seech cracked a one-run single and Nick Calef-Boring wrapped up the inning with a one-run double.

That treated the Bucs to a 12-7 lead.

“I thought Casey’s home run really turned the tide of the game in to our favor,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires.

They needed every run that inning as they didn’t record hit in the final three innings.

The Colts pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap to 12-10.

Philip Barbour couldn’t get any closer though as Cole Hoover came onto the mound and pitched three innings of scoreless ball allowing just one hit.

He earned the save as he walked one and fanned two.

Wesley Rosencrance picked up the win throwing two innings of relief.

He gave up three earned runs on three hits while fanning two.

“Rosencrance and Hoover both did a nice job of throwing strikes early in counts and making them hit to find a way on base,” noted Squires.

The Bucs out hit the Colts by a 12-8 margin.

Seech had three hits while Hoover and Hamner each had two to lead the way.

“We were able to battle back after being down early,” said Squires. “We also hit the ball well with runners on base.”

The Bucs ended their regular season with a 12-16 record.

They will now compete in the Region 1, Section 2 Tournament that gets underway today at Mylan Park.

The Bucs will face University at 7 p.m. while Morgantown and Preston will battle in the other first-round game.
