Baseball Bucs win opener against Hawks in non-conference play, 7-6

Phillips’ seventh-inning diving catch preserves win for B

MORGANTOWN – Tim Phillips made a play of the year for the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer baseball team in their opener Monday night in a non-conference affair against the University Hawks at Mylan Park.

With the Bucs nursing a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh, after University had already scored twice in the inning, the Hawks had the bases loaded with two outs.

University’s Evan Smith hit a sinking liner to left field that Phillips ran under and made a diving catch to preserve the victory for the Bucs.

“That is a game-winner if it falls,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires about the catch.

The two teams played a wild back-and-fourth contest in the opener for both teams.

The Bucs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Cole Hoover hit a line drive single to center field that scored courtesy runner Josh Riffle.

University grabbed a 3-1 lead after a three-run third inning in which the Bucs committed two errors and gave up three walks and a wild pitch.

Hoover hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth that scored Nick Calef-Boring to make it a 3-2 game.

The Bucs retook the lead in the top of the fifth when a fielder’s choice hit by Calef-Boring was thrown away allowing Logan Bailey and Alek Seech to each come home and score.

University tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth with a run when Cam Musgrave reached on an error allowing Hunter Cottrell to score.

The Bucs took the lead back again in the top of the sixth inning when Logan Whitehair dropped a base hit in right field scoring Riffle.

Andrew Herron gave the Bucs some much needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh when he singled home Seech and later scored an error.

That gave the Bucs a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

A pair of errors opened the door for the Hawks to score a pair of runs to make it a 7-6 contest.

A pair of walks loaded the bases for the Hawks before B-U reliever Casey Hamner forced Smith to hit the final out into left field.

B-U collected five hits in the win with Bailey, Herron, Hamner Hoover, and Logan Whitehair each getting one apiece.

Hamner earned the win tossing four innings of relief.

He didn’t give up an earned run on six hits and struck out one.

Bailey started the game for the Bucs and went three innings giving up just one earned run on one hit while fanning one.

Evan Smith had two of University’s seven hits.

Smith also suffered the loss tossing two innings of relief.

He allowed three runs on two hits and walked two.

“It was a great way to start the season,” Squires said. “We have some work to do but I am very happy with the effort and the attitude.”

The Bucs were slated to visit East Fairmont Thursday evening.

They will return to action today when they visit Philip Barbour for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Buckhannon-Upshur will visit  John Marshall Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m.
