Baseball Bucs split Big 10 Conference games with Grafton and Liberty


GRAFTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer baseball team split a pair of Big 10 Conference games this week on the road.

The Bucs dropped a 13-7 contest to Grafton on Monday but rebounded to beat Liberty in extra innings by a 10-6 score.

B-U buried themselves early in the game as Grafton scored two in the top of the first and four in the top of the second for a 6-0 lead.

The Bucs dented the scoreboard in the top of the third when Nick Calef-Boring singled home Tim Phillips with a line drive to left field.

Grafton responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-1 lead.

The Bucs battled back scoring two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Calef-Boring blasted a two-run single to center field that scored Logan Bailey and Alek Seech in the fifth to make it an 8-3 game.

In the sixth, Phillips hit a hard single to left field scoring Trey Leigh, Cole Hoover was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Phillips and Casey Hamner hit a ball that was misplayed allowing Bailey and Calef-Boring to come home and make it an 8-7 game.

Grafton answered with a five-run sixth inning to end the Bucs’ comeback attempt.

The Bucs were outhit in the contest by a 13-6 margin.

Calef-Boring led the offense with two hits and three RBIs while Phillips had two hits and one RBI.

Hoover suffered the loss starting on the mound and going two innings.

He gave up four earned runs on six hits while striking out one.

In Tuesday’s battle, the Bucs struck first with a pair of runs in the top of first when Calef-Boring hit a ground out RBI and Hoover hit a one-run single that scored courtesy runner Josh Riffle.

The Bucs made it a 3-0 game in the top of the second when Andrew Herron had a steal of home after a pick-off play at first base.

Liberty tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the top of the third.

The Bucs retook the lead in the top of the fifth with a three-run fifth inning.

Hoover hit a one-run single that scored Seech, Herron hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Calef-Boring and Hoover later scored to give the Bucs a 6-3 lead.

Liberty chased across two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added one more in the bottom of the seventh to force the game into extra innings.

The Bucs made quick work of Liberty in the extra inning with four runs.

Phillips hit a one-run single that scored Herron and with the bases loaded, Calef-Boring doubled to center field clearing the bases bringing home Phillips, Bailey and Seech.

Seech pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Bucs.

The Bucs collected 13 hits with Bailey getting three while Calef-Boring had two to go along with four RBIs.

Hoover, Herron and Phillips also had two hits in the win.

Seech picked up the win tossing the eighth inning.

The split left the Bucs with a 4-6 record heading into Wednesday’s conference battle with Bridgeport.

They were slated to play Fairmont Senior on Thursday.

They will square off against Lewis County today at 5 p.m.

They will follow that up with a game against Robert C. Byrd  on Tuesday in Clarksburg at 5 p.m.
