Baseball Bucs light up scoreboard in pair of victories against Elkins and Preston

KINGWOOD – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers had their offense clicking in a pair of road wins last week as they knocked off Elkins by an 11-2 score and then crushed Preston by a 15-3 score.

The Bucs managed just six hits despite scoring 11 runs against Elkins, taking advantage of seven Elkins walks and four errors.

The Bucs scored a trio of runs in the first three innings of game for a 9-0 lead.

Jay Burnside hit a sacrifice fly and Ian Donnen hit a two-run home run for the Bucs in the top of the first and Parker Browning, Zach Calef-Boring and Isaac Lane each knocked in a run in the top of the second for the Bucs.

In the third inning, Donnen scored on an error, Zach White raced home on a wild pitch and Brady Hurst scored on a sacrifice fly by Browning.

The Bucs made it 11-0 in the top of the fourth when Elijah Arbogast hit a one-run single and Donnen hit a sacrifice fly that scored Arbogast.

Elkins avoided the shutout with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Calef-Boring had two of B-U’s six hits.

Burnside and Brayden Hamer teamed up on the mound to limit Elkins to just four hits.

Burnside tossed the first three innings and gave up one hit while fanning three.

Hamer threw four innings and didn’t allow an earned run on three hits while striking out two.

Against Preston, the Bucs raced out to a 5-0 lead after one inning of play as the first five batters in the line-up all scored for the visitors.

B-U made it 8-0 in the top of the third with three runs when Cam Tenney, White, and Hurst all scored.

Preston scored their three runs in the bottom of the fifth making it an 8-3 game but the Bucs scored seven times in the top of the sixth sending 11 batters to the plate as they took their 15-3 lead.

The game was halted after six innings on the mercy rule.

The Bucs had 11 hits in the contest with Calef-Boring getting three while Burnside had two and four RBIs.

Hurst started the game and pitched four scoreless innings to get the win.

The action left the Bucs with a 12-7 record heading into the final week of the regular season.

They will play University Tuesday in their sectional opener.
