Baseball Bucs go 2-2 over four-game stretch

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur baseball Buccaneers split four games during a two-week stretch.

Three weeks ago, they lost a 14-4 decision to Robert C. Byrd on April 27 but won a 4-2 contest over Elkins the next day.

The during the week of May 3, they dropped a 12-2 decision to Bridgeport on May 4 but came back to beat Lewis County on May 6 by a 5-3 score.

The action left head coach Adam Squires club with a 7-5 record.

Against Robert C. Byrd, the Eagles hit three home runs off the Bucs.

B-U trailed 4-0 going into the top of second when Eli Bryant hit a sacrifice fly that scored Elijah Arbogast and Cam Tenney hit a one-run single and Brady Hurst hit a one-run double making it a 4-3 game.

The Bucs tied it at 4-4 in the top of the third when Isaac Lane hit a one-out single and later scored on a single by Jay Burnside.

It was all Eagles after that though as they scored one in the bottom of the third, five in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.

The Bucs had eight hits with Zach Calef-Boring and Burnside each getting two.

Arbogast suffered the loss on the mound as he went three innings and gave up four earned runs on four hits while striking out 11.

In their 4-2 win over Elkins, Nate Cerullo crafted a nice game on the mound to get the win going six innings and not allowing an earned run on two hits while striking out eight.

Burnside pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record the save.

Elkins took a 2-0 in the top of the third with two unearned runs, but the Bucs cut that lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when Arbogast singled to center, swiped second and scored on Burnside’s single to left.

The Bucs won the game with a three-run fifth inning.

Donnen hit a one-run double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lane Arbogast singled and came home on a single by Burnside for the 4-2 win.

The Bucs had eight hits with Donnen, Arbogast and Burnside each getting two.

Against Bridgeport, the Bucs gave up seven runs in the first inning in the five-inning 12-2 setback.

The Bucs managed a run in the third and fifth innings.

In the third, Tenney singled and later came home on a fielder’s choice by Donnen and Calef-Boring reached on a fielder’s choice in the fifth and scored on a single by Arbogast.

The Bucs mustered just three hits with Lane, Arbogast and Tenney each getting one.

Arbogast started the game and went just one inning giving up seven runs on five hits as he took the loss.

In the win against Lewis County, Calef-Boring was a perfect four-for-four at the plate and stole three bases to help the Bucs to the 5-3 win.

B-U scored one in the first when Calef-Boring singled and later scored on a ground out and the Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the third when Calef-Boring singled to right, swiped second and third and scored on a single by Arbogast.

Lewis County scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth for a 3-2 lead but the Bucs responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Calef-Boring hit a one-run single, Arbogast hit a one-run single and Donnen hit a one-run single to account for the scoring.

Arbogast picked up the win in a relief role tossing 3 1/3 innings and didn’t allow a run on two hits while striking out six.

The Bucs will be at University today for a 5 p.m. start and then host John Marshall Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
