Baseball Bucs go 2-1at McDonalds Classic

CLARKSBURG – Buckhannon-Upshur went 2-1 in the McDonalds Classic two weeks ago against three-ranked teams – one in Class AAA and two in Class A.

The Bucs won a wild 19-11 affair against then-ranked Class A No. 9 Williamstown on Friday afternoon then lost a game to the top team in Class AAA, Jefferson later that night by a 15-2 score in five innings.

They rebounded to knock off South Harrison, ranked No. 8 in Class A by a 6-5 score Saturday morning.

The action left head coach Adam Squires’ team with a 10-7 record.

Against Williamstown, the Bucs were up 4-1 after one inning when they chased across eight runs in the top of the second for a 12-1 lead.

Up 14-2, they allowed Williamstown an eight-run bottom of the third inning making it a 14-10 game.

Williamstown scored another run in the bottom of the fourth making it a 14-11 game but the Bucs put the game away with five runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 19-11 lead.

The Bucs stole 13 bases in the game while collecting 18 hits.

Isaac Lane paced the offense with three hits and five RBIs while Zach Calef-Boring and Jay Burnside each had three hits.

Cam Tenney drove in three runs on two hits.

Elijah Arbogast picked up the win tossing 4 1/3 innings of relief and allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out five.

In the nightcap with Jefferson, the Bucs were down 3-0 in the bottom of the second before Tenney reached on a one-out error and scored on a single by Calef-Boring.

Jefferson scored four times in the top of the third and twice in the top of the fourth for a 9-1 lead.

The Bucs made it 9-2 when Parker Browning led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

Jefferson scored six times in the top of the fifth as the game was halted after five innings on the mercy rule.

The Bucs had just two hits, one from Calef-Boring and one from Arbogast.

Lane suffered the loss in the start. He went 3 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on four hits and struck out four.

In Saturday’s game with the Hawks, the Bucs were down 2-0 but tied it with a pair of runs in the top of the third when Lane hit a one-run double and Arbogast hit a one-run single.

The Bucs pushed across four runs in the fourth inning for a 6-2 lead and allowed the Hawks three in the fifth inning making it a 6-5 game, but Buckhannon-Upshur kept South Harrison off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings for the one-run win.

The Bucs had nine hits with Calef-Boring, Burnside and Johnny Haddix each getting two.

Nate Cerullo threw seven strong innings in a complete-game effort.

He gave up just one earned runs on four hits while striking out six.

The Bucs were slated to play Lincoln yesterday and will visit East Fairmont today.
