Baseball Bucs go 1-1 against Colts, Polar Bears


FAIRMONT – The Buckhannon-Upshur baseball Buccaneers split a pair of road games last week with the Philip Barbour Colts and Fairmont Senior Polar Bears.

The Bucs dropped a 6-5 decision to Philip Barbour last Tuesday but came back to knock off Fairmont Senior by a 5-4 score that Thursday.

The action left the Bucs of head coach Adam Squires with a 9-6 mark heading into the McDonald’s Tournament last weekend.

The Bucs were their own worst enemy against the Colts making five errors. Only one of Philip Barbour’s six runs were earned.

The B-U pitching staff also gave eight walks to the Colts.

Philip Barbour scored a run in the bottom of the first but the Bucs answered with a run of their own in the top of the second when Ian Donnen led off the stanza with a walk and later scored on a ground out by Cam Tenney.

Philip Barbour took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the third but B-U again tied it with a run in the top of the fifth when Tenney opened the inning with a walk, swiped second and scored on a single by Jay Burnside.

Philip Barbour scored four run behind just two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 6-2 lead.

The Bucs rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh but came up just short of the win.

Tenney singled and later scored on an error and Elijah Arbogast hit a two-run single, but the Bucs left the tying and go-ahead runners stranded on second and third with a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

The Bucs outhit the Colts by a 10-4 margin.

Calef-Boring led the offense with three hits while Burnside and Arbogast each had two.

Brady Hurst suffered the loss for the Bucs pitching two innings of relief.

He allowed two unearned runs on one hit and struck out three.

Against Fairmont Senior, the Bucs struck first in the bottom of the first when Calef-Boring led off with a single and scored on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to Donnen making it a 1-0 game.

The Bucs erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth upping their lead to 5-0.

Calef-Boring hit a one-run single, Burnside had a two-run single and later scored on an error to account for the scoring.

The Polar Bears managed two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth inning making it a 5-3 game.

The Polar Bears closed to 5-4 in the seventh inning with a run, but Arbogast, who came on in relief in the sixth inning, left runners stranded at first and second getting Will Runyon to fly out to Tenney at second base for the final out of the game.

The Bucs had five hits with Calef-Boring leading the offense with two.

Burnside earned the win in a start for the Bucs.

He pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits while fanning three.

Arbogast pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to record the save.

He gave up one earned runs on two hits while striking out two.

The Bucs were slated to play Elkins, Preston and University this week.

They will host John Marshall in a doubleheader today starting at 4 p.m.
