Baseball Bucs fall to University on extra innings walk-off, 5-4

MORGANTOWN – It was a gut-wrenching loss to end the season for the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers here last Wednesday in the Region I, Section 2 elimination game at Mylan Park.

With the Bucs nursing a 4-0  lead in the bottom of the seventh, all they needed was three outs to advance to the sectional title game against Morgantown the next day.

But the Bucs couldn’t hold that lead as University scored four times to tie the game at 4-4.

The Bucs lost the game in the bottom of the eighth by a 5-4 score.

The B-U pitching staff limited the Hawks to just two hits but gave up 13 walks in the contest.

Buckhannon-Upshur was in complete control of the contest for six innings.

They took the lead with a run in the top of the first when Logan Bailey scored on a misplayed bunt hit by Alek Seech.

The Bucs extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth when Josh Riffle scored on a passed ball and Nick Calef-Boring singled home Bailey.

The Bucs made it a 4-0 game in the top of the sixth when Logan Whitehair singled home Ryan Strader.

B-U starting pitcher Casey Hamner, who threw six scoreless innings, was pulled in the top of the seventh after giving up a pair of walks to start the inning

Andrew Herron came for relief and gave up a walk to load the bases for the Hawks.

Max Kitzmiller then hit a two-run double, Kevin Smith later scored on a wild pitch and Kitzmiller came home on another wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4.

Herron started the top of the eighth with a lead-off double but was unable to score during the inning.

With Cole Hoover on the mound for the Bucs, Evan Smith started the inning with a walk and stole second. Kevin Smith was safe on a fielder’s choice that advanced Evan Smith to third.

A walk to Kitzmiller loaded the bases and another walk to Jacob Spearen scored the winning run for the Hawks.

“It was a disappointing way to end our season,” remarked head coach Adam Squires. “We played a very good game for 6 ½ innings. We pitched well, played good defense and executed on offense. Casey was getting tired with his pitch count in the 90s so we went to our next best option – Andrew Herron. He has been our go to guy all season in these type of situations. He just didn’t have his usual command and they were patient at the plate and found their way on base. University did what they had to do to get back in the game and force extra innings and eventually win the game.”

The Bucs had 10 hits in the game with Bailey and Calef-Boring leading the way with two each.

Hamner pitched six innings and gave up just two earned runs on one hit while striking out one.

Herron pitched one inning and allowed two runs on one hit while Hoover absorbed the loss pitching to four batters.

The Bucs ended their year with a 13-18 record.

Morgantown defeated University by a 4-0 score for the sectional crown.

They will play Wheeling Park for the Region I title, who defeated John Marshall by a 7-3 score.
