Baseball Bucs fall to Indians and Polar Bears but defeat Minutemen

Nick Calef-Boring (15) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers takes a cut at a pitch against Fairmont Senior Thursday evening in a Big 10 Conference battle. Calef-Boring had a hit and drove in a run during the Bucs’ 12-2 setback to Fairmont Senior.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer baseball team wrapped up playing five games in five days here last week with a road game with No. 1 Bridgeport on Wednesday and home game with Fairmont Senior on Thursday and Lewis County on Friday.

A B-U rally came up just short against No. 1 Bridgeport in a 7-6 setback and they followed that up with a 12-2 loss to Fairmont Senior.

They ended the week on a positive note as they took a 7-5 game from Lewis County.

The action left head coach Adam Squires’ team with a 5-8 record.

In the Bridgeport game, the Indians took a 5-0 lead after two innings of play.

Nick Calef-Boring put the Bucs on the scoreboard when he singled home Logan Bailey in the top of the third to make it a 5-1 game.

A two-run double by Bridgeport’s Drew Harbert in the bottom of the third made it a 7-1 game.

The Bucs kept battling and made it a 7-5 game with a four-run outburst in the top of the sixth inning.

Tim Phillips hit into a RBI ground out that scored Logan Whitehair, Andrew Herron scored on a wild pitch and Alek Seech doubled to centerfield that brought home Josh Riffle and Bailey to account for the scoring.

Casey Hamner crushed a pitch over the center field fence for the Bucs in the top of the seventh to make it a 7-6 game, but the Bucs couldn’t put another runner on in the inning to deadlock the game.

“I was pleased with how we battled and competed with No. 1 Bridgeport,” remarked Squires. “We weren’t able to capitalize early in the game when we had runners in scoring position. You have to be able to score when you have opportunities in order to compete with a team of that caliber.”

Bailey had three of B-U’s 11 hits while Seech had two.

Hamner suffered the loss in a complete-game effort.

He gave up seven runs on nine hits while striking out four.

Against Fairmont Senior, one bad inning did in the Bucs as they allowed Fairmont Senior to have an eight-run third inning.

The Polar Bears only had four hits in the five-inning game, capitalizing on 10 Buckhannon-Upshur walks.

The Bucs’ two runs occurred in the bottom of the third when Calef-Boring singled home Tim Phillips and Cole Hoover singled home Seech.

The Bucs managed five hits with Seech, Calef-Boring, Hamner, Hoover and Phillips each getting one apiece.

Bailey suffered the loss on the mound going 2 1/3 innings.

He gave up six earned runs on four hits while striking out one.

“Fairmont Senior is a very athletic team,” stated Squires. “They hit the ball well and forced us to go to the bullpen early. Their pitcher, Connor Neal, did a nice job of keeping us off balance.”

In Friday’s action, the Minutemen took an early 1-0 lead after two innings of play, but B-U grabbed the lead with a four-run third inning.

Seech doubled to left field to score Bailey for the Bucs’ first run, Calef-Boring’s grounder was misplayed that allowed Seech to score and Hamer hit a ground ball that was bobbled letting Calef-Boring and Hamner to score.

Lewis scored in the top of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game but the Bucs responded with three runs in their half of the fourth.

Trey Leigh scored on a sacrifice bunt by Phillips and Bailey went deep sending a ball over the center field fence for a two-run home run.

That treated the Bucs to a 7-2 lead.

Lewis County chased across three runs in the top of the fifth, but Herron came on to pitch 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to preserve the win and earn a save.

The Bucs had five hits in the contest with Bailey and Seech each getting two apiece.

Logan Whitehair earned the win going 5 1/3 innings giving up two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three.

“I thought we played our most complete game of the season against Lewis County,” noted Squires. “Logan did a great job on the mound and threw with confidence. We were able to put pressure on their defense and were able to take advantage of some of their mistakes. We also finally had timely hitting when we had runners in scoring position.”

The Bucs had the weekend off and will return to the diamond today when they visit Robert C. Byrd for a 5 p.m. start.
