Baseball Bucs earn one victory in McDonald’s Classic over the weekend

WESTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers went 1-2 in the McDonald’s Classic this past weekend in games played at Lewis County High School and Frank Loria Field in Clarksburg.

The Bucs opened the Classic on Friday beating Liberty-Raleigh by a 12-2 score in six-innings but dropped a pair of games on Saturday to Oak Glen by a 5-1 score and McDowell (Pa.) by a 10-6 score.

The action left head coach Adam Squires and his Bucs with a 7-11 record.

In Friday’s game, Liberty-Raleigh scored first in the top of the first with a run but the Bucs answered with a run of their own when Andrew Herron hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Logan Bailey.

Liberty-Raleigh scored again in the top of the second for a 2-1 lead, but the Bucs fought back with a five-run third inning for a 6-2 lead.

Casey Hamner started the scoring in the inning getting hit by a pitch with a bases loaded, Trey Leigh drew a bases loaded walk, Logan Whitehair had a two RBIs on a fielder’s choice and Alek Seech hit a one-run single to account for the scoring.

The game remained at 6-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Bucs scored six times and ended the contest on the mercy rule.

Andrew Herron doubled home Seech and Bailey to begin the scoring, Nick Calef-Boring scored on an error on a ball hit by Leigh, Whitehair hit an infield single that scored Herron, Seech drew a bases loaded walk and Leigh scored on another error for the 12th run of the game.

The Bucs pounded out 12 hits in the contest with Calef-Boring going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Seech, Herron and Cole Hoover each had two.

Bailey earned the win on the mound going five innings.

He allowed just one earned run on three hits and fanned six.

Herron pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Bucs.

In Saturday’s first game with Oak Glen, the Golden Bears scored three in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead.

The Bucs’ lone run came in the top of the fourth when Leigh singled home Casey Hamner.

Oak Glen added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for their 5-1 win.

Whitehair had two of the Bucs’ five hits.

Hoover absorbed the loss on the mound going four innings and giving up three runs on four hits while striking out one.

In the nightcap with the McDowell Trojans, McDowell scored twice in the top of the first for a 2-0 advantage.

The Bucs answered with one of their own in the bottom of the first when Hamner singled home Seech.

McDowell though scored five times in the top of the second for a 7-1 advantage.

The Bucs scratched away at the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third when Seech tripled home Tim Phillips and Bailey singled to left to bring home Seech making it a 7-3 contest.

Buckhannon-Upshur made it a 7-6 game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Calef-Boring hit a one-run single, Herron had a delayed steal of home and Hamner scored on a passed ball to account for the scoring.

The Bucs couldn’t get any closer though as McDowell put up three runs in the top of the seventh for the 10-6 win.

Seech paced the offense with two of B-U’s seven hits.

Jay Burnside made his first varsity start of the season and suffered the loss.

He went 1 1/3 innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits.

He was one of four B-U pitchers.

The Bucs left after the game for South Carolina and their annual entry into the Mingo Bay Classic.

They were slated to play Lewisburg (SC) on Monday and Robert Winn Academy on Tuesday.

They will compete against Great Falls today at 12:30 p.m. with Thursday’s and Friday’s action to still be determined.
