Baseball Buccaneers earn split with John Marshall in non-conference action

GLEN DALE – Same two teams, same location, two totally different results.

That was the case for the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers and the John Marshall Monarchs here Saturday afternoon in a baseball doubleheader.

The Bucs never got going in a 11-1 loss in the opener in a contest that was halted in the fifth inning on the mercy rule.

The second game was entirely different as the Bucs won a close affair by a 7-6 score.

The split left head coach Adam Squires’ squad with a 2-2 record.

“We came out flat in the first game and didn’t hit the ball well enough to compete,” remarked Squires. “The second game we had a much better approach at the plate and was able to come out with a split on the day.”

In game one, the Monarchs jumped on the Bucs early with four runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the bottom of the second for a 5-0 lead.

The Bucs’ only run came in the top of the third when Alek Seech singled home Trey Leigh.

John Marshall put up a six-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 11-1 lead.

B-U collected five hits in the contest with Logan Bailey, Seech, Andrew Herron, Cole Hoover and Tim Phillips each getting one.

Bailey started the game on the mound and suffered the loss going 3 1/3 innings and allowing nine earned runs on just six hits while walking five and striking out five.

In the second outing, John Marshall scored a run in the bottom of the first but B-U deadlocked the game in the top of the third when Seech doubled home Nick Calef-Boring.

John Marshall chased across four runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-1 lead.

The lead didn’t last long as the Bucs put five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.

During the inning, Bailey had a one-run double, Calef-Boring hit a one-run double, Hamner drew a bases loaded walk that scored Calef-Boring, Herron and a RBI ground out and Leigh a one-run single.

That treated the Bucs to a 6-5 lead.

B-U extended their lead to 7-5 when Calef-Boring singled home Phillips in the top of the sixth inning.

John Marshall scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Herron came to the mound and closed the door on the Monarchs in the bottom of the sixth and shut them down in the seventh for the save.

The Bucs belted out seven hits with Calef-Boring and Seech each getting two apiece.
