Baseball Bobcats take three four of this week

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Adrian Delgado hit a walk-off double against Alderson-Broaddus and a walk-off against Fairmont State as the ‘Cats went 3-1 this week in a pair of MEC doubleheaders.

Wesleyan’s Adrian Delgado has walk-offs in wins over Alderson Broaddus and Fairmont State

BUCKHANNON – Following a 0-6 start to the season, the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team turned it around this week taking three of four games from Alderson Broaddus and Fairmont State in a pair of home Mountain East Conference doubleheaders.

On Monday, the ‘Cats took a pair of games from the Battlers, winning the first one 5-4 and taking the second game, 7-3.

On Wednesday, they dropped the opener to Fairmont State by an 8-2 score but rebounded to take game two in extra innings by a 6-4 score.

The action left head coach Randy Tenney’s team with a 3-7 record.

In Monday’s opener, Wesleyan trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning but Nick Grotti singled home Eric Forbrick and Adrian Delgado reached on an error scoring Grotti making it a 3-2 contest.

Alderson Broaddus scored a run in the top of the fifth for a 4-2 lead, but Wesleyan tied it in their half of the fifth with a one-run double by Delgado and a one-run single by Cade Leach.

Wesleyan won it in the bottom of the seventh with a walk off double by Delgado that scored pinch runner Blake McMullen.

Wesleyan had eight hits in the contest with Grotti getting three.

Anthony Napoleon (1-1) picked up the win for Wesleyan tossing 2 2/3 innings of relief.

He didn’t allow a run while giving up two hits and striking out two.

Wesleyan found themselves behind again in game two by a 2-0 score going into the bottom of the third inning.

Tanner McCallister hit a one-run single and then later scored on a wild pitch to even the game for Wesleyan at 2-2.

The ‘Cats took a 5-2 lead with a three-run fourth inning when Sam Ingram was hit by a pitch and later scored, Grotti was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Bryson Fluke scored on a wild pitch.

Wesleyan added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth when McCallister hit a sacrifice fly that scored Leach and Fluke hit a one-run single that plated Ingram.

Alderson Broaddus wrapped up the scoring with a run in the top of the sixth.

Wesleyan managed just four hits in the win with Fluke, Grotti, Leach and McCallister each getting one.

Parker Tallman (1-1) earned the win for Wesleyan throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief.

He didn’t allow a run and gave up just one hit while fanning four.

In Wednesday’s first game with Fairmont State, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Wesleyan deadlocked the game at 1-1 in their half of the first when Leach singled to center bringing home Eric Forbrick.

Fairmont State scored three runs in the top of third and four more in the top of fourth for an 8-1 lead.

Wesleyan got one more run in the game, a one-run single from Ingram in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Leach led Wesleyan’s seven-hit attack with three hits.

In the nightcap Wednesday, Wesleyan had a big first inning getting a three-run home run from Leach and Charles Shearer scored on an error as the ‘Cats took a 4-0 lead.

The game stayed at 4-0 until the top of the seventh Fairmont State tied the game with a four-run inning behind a two-run double from Vince Sabatino and two-run home run from Justin Brown as the contest went extra innings.

Wesleyan won it in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run walk-off home run by Delgado.

Wesleyan had 11 hits with Delgado getting three.

Tallman (2-1) earned the win throwing 1/3 of an inning of relief.

The ‘Cats will return to the diamond this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders with Charleston.

Today’s and Sunday’s doubleheaders will both start at 1 p.m.
