Baseball Bobcats slide reaches nine games after losing a pair of contests to Concord


ATHENS – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat losing streak reached nine games on Monday after they dropped a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to Concord at Anderson Field.

The game was played on Monday after being rained out on Sunday.

The Bobcats dropped game one by a 12-2 score and then went 10 innings with Concord in game two and lost a 7-6 verdict.

The two losses dropped the ‘Cats of Randy Tenney to 14-23 overall and 7-12 in the MEC.

Wesleyan had more errors than hits in game one with just three hits while committing five errors.

Dominic Castello scored on a fielder’s choice in the top of the second to treat the ‘Cats to a 1-0 lead, but Concord answered with one in the bottom of the second, two in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-1 lead.

Concord put the game away with a seven-run fifth inning for an 11-1 lead.

Eric Forbrick hit a solo home in the top of the sixth for Wesleyan to make it an 11-2 contest, but Concord wrapped up the scoring with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.

Forbirck had two of Wesleyan’s three hits.

Michael Maiolo (4-3) suffered the loss going 4 2/3 innings.

He gave up just four earned runs on 12 hits while striking out four.

In game two, Concord raced out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of action.

Wesleyan deadlocked the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth after Alek Skinner hit a one-run single, Antonio Vega hit a one-run single and Nick Grotti smacked a one-run single.

Wesleyan took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth when Forbrick and Dominic Castello each hit a one-run single.

Wesleyan extended their lead to 6-3 on a Forbrick home run in the top of the seventh.

The ‘Cats couldn’t hold on to the lead as Concord’s Jakob Divers hit a two-run home run and Nathan Neff cracked a one-run double to tie the game at 6-6.

Concord won the game on a Wesleyan error scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th.

Wesleyan mustered 11 hits in the loss with Grotti getting three while Forbrick and Vega each collected two.

Castello (3-3) suffered the loss pitching four innings of relief.

He allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out six.

The ‘Cats will return home this weekend with a two-day outing with West Virginia State.

The two will play a doubleheader starting on Friday at 1 p.m. and then on Saturday they will meet again for a twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
