Baseball Bobcats go 1-1 during day one of spring break tour

WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team began play on the spring break tour of Florida Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader split against Northern State (SD) Wolves.

The ‘Cats dropped the opener by a 4-1 score but rebounded to take the second outing by an 11-1 score.

In their first game Saturday, their lone run was a solo home run by Greg Smith in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesleyan collected just four hits in the contest with Eric Forbrick getting two while Domonic Castello and Smith had the other two.

Griffin Roe absorbed the loss for Wesleyan on the mound going six innings. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.

Jake Hakey pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Wesleyan.

Game two saw a totally different Bobcat team as they scored 11 runs on 12 hits.

Wesleyan started quick with a four-run outburst in the top of the first.

They added to the lead in the top of the second when Forbrick singled home Jonathan Cintron to make it a 5-0 contest.

Northern State avoided the shutout with their lone run coming in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Wesleyan tacked on two more in the top of the fifth and the top of the sixth for a 9-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Alex Skinner homered to left field and later in the frame, Ryan Kiser singled to right center bringing home Forbric to wrap up the scoring.

Cintron, Forbrick, Kiser and Sam Ross led the 12-hit attack with two hits apiece.

Michael Maiolo earned the win for Wesleyan with six strong innings.

He didn’t allow an earned run on six hits while not walking a batter and striking out 10

Castello pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Wesleyan started their 2019 campaign two weeks ago with a pair of doubleheaders against Pitt-Johnstown at Myrtle Beach.

The ‘Cats lost both games on the first day, 20-8 and 1-0, but came back to earn a split on day two, losing the first contest, 3-2, but winning the nightcap, 7-6.

The action left the ‘Cats with a 2-4 record heading into action Sunday where they were slated to play Grand Valley State.

They will return to action today as they play the University of Findlay in a doubleheader starting at 10:15 a.m.

They will take on Ashland University Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
