Baseball Bobcats drop road twin bill to Hilltoppers

WEST LIBERTY – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat pitching staff couldn’t hold up against the West Liberty Hilltoppers in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Kovalick Field.

The ‘Cats gave up 25 runs on the day, including a 13-8 loss in game one and a 12-8 setback in game two.

Wesleyan’s defense didn’t help the pitching staff as they committed seven errors in the two games.

The two losses kept Wesleyan winless on the season at 0-4.

In Monday’s first game, West Liberty took a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.

Wesleyan got two of those runs back in the top of the third scoring them on a West Liberty miscue making it a 3-2 contest.

West Liberty scored in the next four innings, chasing across 10 unanswered runs building their lead to 13-2.

Wesleyan made the final score respectable with a six-run seventh inning.

Nick Grotti had a one-run single, Sam Ingram hit a two-run single, Andrew Walker scored on a wild pitch, Geovani Sostre hit a one-run single, and Sam Ross scored on a West Liberty error to account for the scoring in the seventh.

Wesleyan mustered just five hits with Bryson Fluke, Grotti, Walker, Ingram and Sostre each getting one.

Mitchell Courtney (0-1) started the game for Wesleyan and lasted 2 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs on five hits while fanning two.

In game two, Wesleyan trailed 3-0 after two innings before Cole Shearer drew a bases loaded walk that scored Tanner McCallister making it a 3-1 contest.

A disastrous third inning sank the ‘Cats as they gave up nine runs and trailed by a 12-1 score.

They did plate four runs in the top of the fifth behind a West Liberty error, a passed ball and a pair of one-run singles from Dylan Poplin and Tanner McCallister.

That made it a 12-5 game.

Wesleyan kept battling and scored three runs in the top of seventh with McCallister hitting a two-run double and Forbrick hitting a one-run single to close the final score to 12-8.

Wesleyan had seven hits with Forbrick collecting three and McCallister two.

Parker Tallman (0-1) got the start for Wesleyan and absorbed the loss.

He went two innings and gave up nine earned runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Wesleyan will return to action Friday hosting Alderson Broaddus in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and then will stay at home Saturday facing Notre Dame College in a pair of games starting at 1 p.m.
