Baseball Bobcats drop road doubleheader to West Virginia State, 2-1 and 8-2

Robbie Baker

INSTITUTE – Robbie Baker and Alec Tamburri combined to pitch one of the best games of the year for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, but it still wasn’t enough to lead them to a victory against West Virginia State Yellow Jackets in the first game of a road doubleheader Monday afternoon.

The duo didn’t give up an earned run on just five hits, but Wesleyan dropped a 2-1 contest.

Baker got the start and went 3 2/3 innings while Tamburri tossed 2 1/3 innings.

Wesleyan went on to drop the nightcap by an 8-2 score.

Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Eric Forbrick hit a sacrifice fly that scored Adrian Delgado.

An error allowed Matt Harrison to score in the bottom of the first for the Yellow Jackets’ first unearned run of the game.

West Virginia State scored the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the fourth when Michael Stone knocked in Jared Hunt who had singled, moved to second on an error and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Wesleyan put runners on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but were unable to chase a run across.

Wesleyan had just two hits in the contest, a pair of singles by Nick Grotti and Andrew Walker.

In game two, Wesleyan fell behind by a 3-0 score before Sam Ross put Wesleyan on the board in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly that scored Bryson Fluke making it a 3-1 game.

West Virginia Stated pushed across a run in their half of the third to increase their lead to 5-1.

Ross hit a single up the middle scoring Forbrick in the top of the fifth cutting the lead down to 5-2.

Matthew Kline hit a solo home run for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the fifth and Harrison hit a one-run single and Kline homered again, this time a two-run shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth making it an 8-2 game.

Wesleyan went down in order in the top of the seventh.

Wesleyan mustered just two hits again in the nightcap getting singles from Forbrick and Ross.

Aaron Bradley (0-1) got the start for Wesleyan and went two innings.

He gave up two earned runs on three.

West Virginia State improved to 24-7 on the year.

Wesleyan dropped to 3-20 heading into Wednesday’s home doubleheader with Frostburg State.

They will return to action Saturday hosting Glenville State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and then play them again Sunday at home in a twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
