Baseball Bobcats drop a pair of heartbreakers to UVa.-Wise in extra innings


WISE (Va.) – A pair of one-run extra-inning losses added to the misery of the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team Sunday at the hands of UVa.-Wise in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Stallard Field.

Wesleyan had early leads in both games but suffered walk-off losses in each game as they dropped game one by a 5-4 score and nightcap by a 10-9 score. Both games went eight innings.

Wesleyan saw their record drop to 16-30 overall and 9-19 in the MEC.

In game one, Ryan Kiser hit into a double play that scored Nick Grotti in the top of the second to give Wesleyan a quick 1-0 lead.

UVa.-Wise scored two in the bottom of the second on a Bret Roberts’ two-run single that gave them a 2-1 lead.

Wesleyan used the long ball to retake the lead 3-2 in the top of the third when Alex Skinner hit a two-run shot over the right center field fence.

Wesleyan held their 3-2 lead until the bottom of the fifth when Tristan Peccerelli hit a two-run blast to give the lead back to the Cavaliers at 4-3.

Wesleyan tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning when Eric Forbrick scored on a throwing error.

UVa.-Wise won the game in the bottom of the eighth when Tyler Blaum reached on a throwing error with the bases loaded with one out allowing Roberts to score from third.

Wesleyan collected six hits with Forbrick and Castello each getting two.

Jake Hakey (0-3) suffered the loss pitching 2 1/3 innings of relief.

He gave up one unearned run on two hits and struck out four.

In the high-scoring second game, Wesleyan grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Antonio Vega scored Greg Smith on a double play ball and Grotti hit a one-run single scoring Jonathan Cintron.

UVa.-Wise scored three in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second for a 5-2 advantage.

Wesleyan used a four-run fourth inning to retake the least at 6-5.

Forbrick hit a one-run single, Grotti hit a sacrifice fly and Sam Ross cracked a two-run single to account for the scoring.

UVa.-Wise countered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and chased a run across in the fifth and sixth innings for a 9-6 lead.

Wesleyan tied the game with a three-run tally in the top of the seventh.

Forbrick hit a solo home run, Ben Fulks nailed a one-run single and Travis Renner scored on a passed ball.

UVa.-Wise won it again in the bottom of the eighth inning.

David Thomas started the frame for the Cavaliers with a walk and Peccerelli singled up the middle moving Thomas to second.

Dominic Castello was called to the mound and forced Cal Bailey into a pop up and struck out Matthew Branham for the first two outs, but Jordon Turner hit a single down the field line for the walk-off win.

Wesleyan collected 11 hits in the loss with Grotti getting three and Smith and Forbrick two each.

Kyle Riggleman (0-2) suffered the loss pitching 2 2/3 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on four hits.

UVa.-Wise improved to 25-21 overall and 19-9 in the MEC.

The Bobcats will wrap up their season this weekend.

They will visit Glenville State for a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m., and then following graduation on Saturday, will host the Pioneers for a league twin bill on Sunday at 1 p.m.
