Banks District Volunteer Fire Department hosts “Summer Jam”

ROCK CAVE — On Saturday, June 11, the Banks District Volunteer Fire Department hosted their yearly community appreciation night titled “Summer Jam.” The celebration was postponed in years prior because of COVID-19. The event was free to the community and had entertainment provided by Stone Creek Band. Additionally, Jaws BBQ provided concessions to those in attendance.

Upon arriving to the event, the Stone Creek Band performed a sound check and community members enjoyed the fellowship with their neighbors and first responders.

“We do this for our community and we don’t charge anything. We are trying to get volunteers as well. With COVID, we were not able to have it for a couple years,” said BDVFD EMS Director John Roby. “It does feel like everyone is blaming COVID for so much, but look at fuel prices, look at the economy right now… I know it is hard but I saw a quote on Facebook about how volunteers are still filling up their tanks at $4.99 a gallon. Of course, we are still paying it and are going to keep helping our community.”

Many of the attendees noted that they enjoyed the band and were excited to have the event. Those in attendance also enjoyed the pork barbecue sandwiches, smiling as they chowed down on their barbecue dish.

People were certainly enjoying the rock music and seen clapping and stomping their feet to the beat. One attendee shared, “I’ve never heard of this band before but they sound really good!”

The department’s Facebook page elaborated on their mission and contact information. The page reads, “It is the mission of the Banks District Volunteer Fire Department to provide maximum protection of life and property through the prevention and extinguishment of fires, performance of emergency medical services, rescue response, and hazardous material response to the citizens of Southern Upshur County and surrounding areas. The Banks District Volunteer Fire Department will attain this goal through preparation and training, dedication, public education and a constant focus toward the end result -- A Safe Community. Please dial 911 if you are having an emergency. For all non-emergencies, please dial (304) 924-6864.”

Thank you to Banks District for hosting the event and your continued service to our community! Also thank you to Stone Creek Band for the great entertainment and to Jaws BBQ for the yummy food! Those interested in learning more about volunteering in the fire service may contact Banks District at the non-emergency number listed above or any of the other Upshur County Fire Departments.
