Bailey’s grand slam lifts Bucs past East Fairmont, 10-7

MYRTLE BEACH – Logan Bailey hit a grand slam and Casey Hamner added a solo shot to power the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers past the No. 9 AA East Fairmont Bees by a 10-7 score on the final day of their Mingo Bay Classic action.

Friday’s contest was rained out in Myrtle Beach leaving the Bucs with a 3-1 record during the Classic.

Despite the game being played eight hours away from home, it was a measure of revenge for the Bucs who suffered a 13-3 loss back on March 21 in their second game of the season.

“East Fairmont is a very good team from top to bottom and you have to beat them to win,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires. “They don’t make many mistakes. We were able to have clutch hitting when we needed it and scored runs when we had opportunities.”

The Bucs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Nick Calef-Boring hit a ground out RBI that scored Bailey.

East Fairmont scored three times in their half of the first for a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the second, Hamner crushed a pitch over the center field fence and the Bucs loaded the bases for Bailey, who knocked it out of the park to center field giving Buckhannon-Upshur a 6-3 lead.

East Fairmont scored one in their half the second and third innings and tacked on two more in the fourth to grab a 7-6 lead.

The Bucs tied it in the top of the fifth when Hamner scored on an error on a ball hit by Trey Leigh.

Buckhannon-Upshur took the lead for good with a three-run sixth inning.

Alek Seech hit a one-run double and Cole Hoover smacked a two-run double to account for the scoring.

East Fairmont brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but B-U reliever Andrew Herron had Cole Peschl fly out for the final out with runners at first and second base.

The Bucs managed 10 hits in the win with Bailey and Hoover each getting three apiece.

Herron earned the win tossing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing four hits while striking out two.

The win improved Squires’ squad to 10-12 on the season.

They will return to action today hosting Grafton and then will visit Elkins Tuesday.
