B-UMS wrestling team posts 3-2 Fairmont Field House Duals

BUCKHANNON — On Saturday, January 8, the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School wrestling team traveled to Marion County to take part in the Fairmont Field House Duals. The Little Bucs’ 2021-22 season has been a resounding success up to this point, seeing many of their athletes push themselves to the next level, collecting big wins along the way. The Little Bucs wrestlers made sure that trend continued, going 3-2 as a team in the meet. Overall, the B-UMS wrestlers in finished a combined 38-30 against top notch competition.

The Little Bucs were led by Eli Watkins (155-weight classification), who finished the meet with a flawless 5-0 record. Watkins was in peak form during the trip to Fairmont, conquering all challenges placed before him. Emma Hawkins (Heavyweight) was the only other B-UMS wrestler to finish the dual undefeated, beating the only opponent she was matched up against on her way to posting a 1-0 record. Jeremy Jett (95) ensured that his string of strong performances this season continued in Fairmont, narrowly missing out on an undefeated, posting a 4-1 overall record in the meet. Both Riel Figueroa (110) and Matthew Hawkins posted 4-1 records to) round out the list of the Little Bucs’ wrestling team’s top performers. 

Meanwhile, Brianna Howes (116) continued her standout season, finding a way to beat out her almost exclusively male competition more often than not to come away with a 3-2 recond. Meanwhile, both Hunter Cowgar (128) and Preston Harris (145) managed to put together winning records, also finishing at 3-2; completing the list of Little Bucs that left Marion County with a winning percentage over 50%. With 6 of their 12 varsity wrestlers finishing the meet with a winning record, head coach J.P. Tenney’s Little Bucs found a way to keep beating out stout competition. In doing so, they have shown a great deal of mental toughness and physical fortitude. 

While Will Kennedy (78) at 2-3, Tucker Mason (102) at 1-4, Haylee Woody (123) at 0-5, Kaden Thomas (135) at 2-3, Alex Hawkins (171) at 2-3, Chance Morgan (190) at 2-3 all finished with losing records overall, they all flashed their potential at times hinting for more wins in the near future. Overall, the performance of Tenney’s Little Bucs show that the Buckhannon-Upshur High School wrestling team has a bright future and will have a pipeline of talented wrestling prospects coming onto the roster for years to come.
