B-UMS volleyball continues winning streak

PHILIPPI — The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams continued their winning streak when they traveled to Philippi Middle School on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.

“Tonight, JV finished their season. The girls were a little off to start but came around and got their spacing down and picked up their communication. We were able to start limiting our errors,” said Coach Sheena Westfall. Avery Hamer and Rebecca Pastorius were strong players at the net and defensively for the team. Jayla Westfall, Hamer, and Pastorius dominated at the serving line, which is where most of their points came from during the game. Westfall had the only two assists this game, while Pastorius led with six of the team’s total 17 aces.

“These girls had a really good season. They worked together and improved together. As a team, they went undefeated with an overall record of 10-0. It will be exciting to see how things go next year with this group. For some, this was their first year playing and hopefully they continue to work on the offseason,” Coach Westfall remarked. The Little Lady Bucs JV team remains undefeated with a record of 10-0.

The last time the B-UMS varsity squad played Philippi, the match went into three sets with one resulting in their highest scoring set of the season at 28-26. “Tonight we had the first serve and were able to get a little momentum,” said Coach Westfall. Philippi started coming back with solid plays that B-U struggled to cover after briefly falling behind, but the Little Lady Bucs regained their momentum in the start of the second set. With a team total of seven aces, Makenzie Egress led with four and she also had the only four assists of the game.

Coach Westfall noted that Sophie Lantz, Bailey Radabaugh, and Reagan Mason were getting swings on the ball at the net, instead of going for the hard hit. “These girls did a better job of looking for the open gaps and just tipping the ball over to them,” stated Coach Westfall.

“It has been fun to watch them grow and develop, not only into volleyball players, but amazing young women. They all have a lot of potential to do some great things as long as they put the work in,” exclaimed Coach Westfall.
