B-UMS softball team off to rocky start


TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Bucs got the 2019 softball season off to a rocky start last week, dropping a pair of games that were shortened by the mercy rule.

They were no-hit in a 12-0 loss to Tucker Valley in their season opener on Wednesday in a three-inning clash, and fell to Mountaineer (Clarksburg) last Friday by an 18-1 count in a four-inning game.

Jansen Kimble suffered the loss in the opener, surrendering four hits and the 12 runs, while walking seven, hitting one batter and striking out four in two innings. Bailey Blackwell tossed an inning of no-hit relief, walking three and hitting a batter.

Tucker Valley scored five runs in the first and seven in the second frame.

Paige Shaeffer got the win, issuing two walks and fanning five.

Buckhannon’s lone run in the loss to Mountaineer came in the third inning when Avery Lantz belted a lead-off homer.

The Little Lady Bucs got a double from Kimble and a single from Alyssa Abel for their other two hits.

Kimble started in the circle and took the loss, giving up seven hits and eight runs in 2 1/3 innings, with Blackwell allowing five hits and 10 runs in 1 2/3 stanzas of relief.

Mountaineer tallied six runs in the first canto, three in the third and nine in the fourth.

Riley Pearlman and Kady Crock had home runs for Mountaineer.

Tori Anderson earned the victory. She walked two and whiffed one.

The Little Lady Bucs will travel to Elkins today to battle the Lady Green Hornets. They will be on the road for four games next week – Barrackvillle Monday, Robert L. Bland Tuesday, Lincoln Wednesday, and Tucker Valley Friday.

They were to have visited Washington Irving Tuesday and South Harrison Wednesday.
