CLARKSBURG — Head Coach Jim Gregory and the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Buccaneers softball team kicked off their season with a contest against the Washington Irving Hilltoppers last Thursday, March 17.

The Lady Bucs got the scoring started early when Reese Curry hit a double to bring a runner home. At the end of the first inning of action, the Little Lady Bucs held a 3-0 lead over the Hilltoppers. Coach Gregory’s team kept cruising at a steady offensive pace in the second and third innings, scoring 4 runs in each to bring their lead to 11-0 heading into the fourth.

The Little Lady Bucs, who had hit the ball extremely well all day long, exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning alone. The final inning’s offensive fireworks comprised of scored runs from Curry, Lainey Rohr, Shaylee Hebb Kallie Perry, Sarah Coffman and Leah Bryant.

Coach Gregory’s team was offensively aggressive throughout the game. As a team, the Little Lady Bucs recorded 13 hits and stole 12 bases. Curry, Rohr and Reagan Mason led the way at the plate for the Little Lady Bucs, all registering multiple hits. Curry led the trio by going 3-4 at the plate, while Rohr went 2-3 and Mason went a perfect 2-2. Mason also led the team with 3 stolen bases.

While the Little Lady Bucs’ huge, 10-run fourth inning might have been the final act in sealing a dominant 21-0 showing over W.I. in their season opener, it was only a part of the team’s thoroughly impressive performance. As a team, the Little Lady Bucs did not commit a single-error all night, playing sound defense in the field, perfectly complementing Rohr’s strong arm. Rohr gained her first victory of the season on the mound as the Little Lady Bucs’ starting pitcher, not allowing a single hit or run, while striking out 5 batters in 4 innings of action.

Up next, the Little Lady Bucs will play at home against the East Fairmont Hornets, Tuesday, March 22.
