B-UMS JV volleyball team is on fire

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School junior varsity volleyball team’s winning streak continues, as they are now 9-0 after defeating Taylor County Middle School on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at a home match.

Alivia Cogar led in digs with 16, followed by Avery Hamer with 13, and Rebecca Pastorius with 12. “We did not play our best tonight, but we were fortunate enough to come away with the win. We seemed to struggle with getting ourselves energized and struggled early on at the serving line, but Avery Hamer, Karson Karikoff, and Becca Pastorius came up big for us when it was needed,” exclaimed Coach Sheena Westfall.

Hamer led with seven aces, helping the Little Lady Bucs secure the win against Taylor County Middle. Karikoff, Pastorius, Cogar, Jayla Westfall, and Tori Hagerich all had aces to contribute to the winning score. Coach Westfall said, “Hamer and Westfall were getting good connections at the net. Avery does a great job reading the set and she is able to roll off Westfall to keep the ball in play. Alivia Cogar was a big help on the defensive end with her digs tonight. Even at not playing our best, the girls came together and got the job done by the end of the night. They had everyone on the edge of their seats and made the game fun to watch for sure!”

B-UMS varsity won both sets against Taylor County and their record is now 7-3. Makenzie Egress was the only one with assists on the board with six.

“We were able to pull off the win, but we did not seem to be very energetic as we played. In both sets, we started off slow moving to the ball, but about mid-set both times, we started to pick up our movement. Our front line with Bailey and Sophie, they were attacking hard. When we were able to do bump-set-spike, it made it difficult for Taylor County,” Coach Westfall stated. “Our serving was off as well. Girls who usually make one or two errors had more than that tonight. The girls would take the coaching tip, make the adjustment, and things would fall in our favor. Varsity did a better job than JV of keeping the momentum on our side and using Taylor County’s errors to our advantage.”

The Little Lady Bucs have a very busy week ahead with the upcoming schedule:

October 11 - at Taylor County

October 13 - Home vs. Belington (Varsity only) then JV and Varsity against Elkins
