B-UHS wrestlers start 2022 with strong showings

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School wrestling teams opened up the new year with two strong showing in early January. Jacob Orr, B-UHS wrestling head coach, has focused on ensuring his teams trend in the right direction. 

For the first outing, the weekend of Friday, January 14 and Saturday, January 15, the Bucs traveled to Fairmont to compete in the North Central West Virginia Winner’s Choice Tournament, one of the state’s most competitive meets. The teams were prepared to compete against some of the mountain state’s best. Out of 28 teams representing classes A-AAA, the Bucs finished in 12-place as a team, one spot ahead of rival Lewis County. 

Notable key performers for the Bucs at the NCWV Winner’s Choice Tournament were sophomore Liam Garcia (113-pound weight classification), who finished fifth, junior Nathan Cornett (145), who finished sixth, senior Luke Bohnsack (152), who finished seventh and senior Alex Bennett (220), who finished fifth in their respective weight classes. The JV wrestlers finished the meet tied for twenty-eighth as a team. 

The second outing saw the Bucs travel to take part in the Brooke Classic on Saturday, January 22. The visit ended their trip with a 1-1 record as a team, losing to University 51-14 and beating Morgantown 51-30. 

For the varsity team, Ian Cornett (106/113) went 1-1, notching 2 takedowns; 1 escape, and 1 pin fall on his way to scoring 6 team points. Cornett pinned his Morgantown opponent before losing a decision his University opponent. Liam Garcia (120) went 2-0, highlighted by 3 takedowns, and 1 escape to chip in 6 total team points. Garcia won by decision over both #6 Pauley from University and #8 Spohn from Morgantown. #7 Aidan Wilson (126) finished the Brooke Classic 2-0. Wilson’s performance featured 4 takedowns, 1 escape, and 1 pin fall on his way to tallying 10 team points. Wilson nabbed both of his wins by major decision over #6 Oxley University and his opponent from Morgantown. Brodee Kennedy (132) finished the meet 1-1, 2 takedowns, and 1 pin fall, adding 6 team points. Kennedy lost to his opponent representing University and notched a win by fall against his Morgantown opponent. #5 Tucker Hurst (138) starred for the Bucs, finishing an undefeated 2-0. Hurst recorded 3 takedowns, 1 escape, and 1 pin fall on his way to scoring 9 team points. Hurst defeated #8 Pauley from University via decision and Smith/Belt Morgantown by fall. Nathan Cornett (145) split his matches in the meet, finishing 1-1. Cornett registered 4 escapes on his way to chipping in 6 team points. Cornett lost to #1 Felix from University and won by forfeit Morgantown. #8 Luke Bohnsack (152) finished the meet with a 1-1 record, recording 1 takedown and 1 reversal on his way to adding 4 team points. Bohnsack won by major decision in his match with University and before losing to Thompson from Morgantown. Trevor Miller-Waycaster (160) ended the trip to Brooke with a 1-1 record, notching 2 takedowns, 1 escape, and 1 pin, while scoring 6 team points. Miller-Waycaster lost his opening match to #2 Hagedorn from University before grabbing a win by fall over Haney from Morgantown.

Oscar Blonn (182) finished with an even 1-1 mark, highlighted by 1 escape. Blonn scored 6 team points during the meet, losing to #7 Taylor from University before winning by forfeit Morgantown. Jeremiah Thompson (195) ended the trip 0-2 against ranked competition, losing to both #2 Kehler from University and #5 Harmon from Morgantown.

#5 Alex Bennett (220) ended the meet 1-1, with 2 takedowns to his name, and adding 6 team points to B-U’s total. Bennett opened the Brooke Classic with a loss to McBee from University before taking home a win by forfeit over Morgantown. 

For the JV team, Colton Wendling (126) and Daniel Hedrick both finished with 0-1 records; suffering defeats to opponents from University. Andrew McDowell (138) finished a perfect 2-0, recording 3 takedowns, 2 reversals, and 1 pin. He defeated his opponent from University by fall and then won via decision against Morgantown’s wrestler. Landon Zirkle (145) finished 1-1, registered 1 takedown, 3 escapes, 3 reversals, and 1 pin. Zirkle lost his opening match to his opponent from University and won by fall in his second match against Morgantown. Evan McDowell (152) finished the meet 1-0, with 1 takedown and 1 fall to his name. McDowell won by fall against University to cap off a strong meet for both of B-UHS’ wrestling teams.
