B-UHS wins Battle of the Axe, shuts out Elkins, 27-0

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School (B-UHS) Football team secured the win for the Battle of the Axe on Friday, beating Elkins High School by a score of 27-0. The Buccaneers were able to maintain a heavy ground attack to propel them to a shutout victory over their rival.

B-UHS came in into Friday’s matchup sitting at 4-5, while the Elkins Tigers came into the matchup with a record of 1-8 on the season. B-UHS was able to finish their 2022 season with a 5-5 record to end the year. 

The Buccaneers played a stout game on both sides of the ball, shutting out the Tigers and reaching the endzone four times, by way of the run. For the Buccaneers first possession of the game, their offense was able to maintain an 80-yard drive, with all plays consisting of a run, for the game’s first touchdown. B-UHS went up 7-0, with 18 seconds left in the first quarter. 

The Tigers were able to move the ball down the field, with a small gain on their next drive, pushing B-UHS to jump offsides on a fourth down and 4. However, the Buccaneer defense was able to eliminate any threat of an opponent score earlier in the game. 

B-UHS was able to build their score up 14-0, with 3:27 left in the second quarter, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run. The Buccaneers were able to take this 14-0 lead into halftime. 

Returning from the half, the Buccaneers received the ball first to begin play but were stopped short on their first possession. Elkins was able to force a fumble and recover the ball at the Elkins 4-yard line after an explosive run by the Buccaneer offense. B-UHS forced a turnover-on-downs at the Tigers 31-yard line to regain possession. The Buccaneers were able to score their third rushing touchdown on a 2-yard run, with 4:03 left in the third quarter. B-UHS moved to 20-0 on the Elkins Tigers late in the third quarter. 

The Buccaneers scored their fourth touchdown on 54-yard rushing play, with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The rushing touchdown increased the B-U lead to 27-0. 

Elkins starting quarterback was able to complete the first pass of the game at the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter. The Buccaneer defense stood strong and made one final stand against the Elkins Tigers, intercepting a pass. B-UHS finished the game strong, winning with a final score of 27-0.

The 2022-2023 Buckhannon-Upshur High School Football team finished their season, ending on a three-game winning streak and taking home the Battle of the Axe.
